Systems and methods for activating and deactivating cylinders of an engine that may activate and deactivate one cylinder independent of other cylinders are presented. In one example, an engine cylinder firing fraction and a remainder value that is based on the engine cylinder firing fraction are a basis for activating and deactivating engine cylinders. The systems and methods also provide for transitioning between different cylinder firing fractions.

System and method for operating engine cylinders

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting the opening of a scroll valve of a binary flow turbine. Scroll valve adjustments are used at different engine operating conditions to improve engine performance and boost response. Scroll valve adjustments are coordinated with wastegate and EGR valve adjustments for improved engine control.

A vehicle includes a transmission and a controller. Multi-component transient fuel compensation

A method and system are provided for controlling a device in an internal combustion engine such as a spark plug, a camshaft actuator, an EGR valve actuator, etc. The method and system are designed to compensate for changes in environmental operating conditions of the engine not accounted for in control variable scheduling. A parameter value is determined responsive to one or more engine operating conditions (e.g., ambient temperature, engine oil temperature, etc.). Potential values for the parameter are divided into predetermined value ranges. A schedule of control values for the device is then selected from among a plurality of control value schedules for the device responsive to the parameter value. Each control value schedule in the plurality of control value schedules corresponds to one of the aforementioned value ranges for the parameter. The device is then controlled responsive to a control value obtained from the selected control value schedule.

System and method for transitioning between engine device schedules based on engine operating condition

A method for controlling mode transitions, such as from stratified to homogeneous mode, in a direct injection engine adjusts an intake manifold outlet control device, such as a cam timing, to rapidly control cylinder fresh charge despite manifold dynamics. In addition, a coordinated change between an intake manifold inlet control device, for example a throttle, and the outlet control device is used to achieve the rapid cylinder fresh charge control. In this way, engine torque disturbances during the mode transition are eliminated, even when cylinder air/fuel ratio is changed from one cylinder event to the next.

Direct injection variable valve timing engine control system and method

A system and method for controlling first and second phase shiftable camshafts in a variable cam timing engine is provided. The method includes determining when the first camshaft is moving toward a first scheduled phase angle with respect to the crankshaft with a larger camshaft angular positioning error than the second camshaft. Finally, the method includes slowing down the first camshaft so that synchronized camshaft positioning can be better achieved.

Cam synchronization algorithm for engine with variable cam timing

A method for estimating operating parameters of an internal combustion engine uses data stored as a function of intake and exhaust valve timing. In particular, the parameters are stored at a default operating point, several stability limited points, a high performance point, and an intermediate point. An inverse distance interpolation algorithm is used to calculated current slope and offset values at the current operating conditions. From these calculated slope and offset values, engine operating parameters, such as manifold pressure and cylinder air amount, are estimated.
