As an autonomously guided industrial vehicle travels through a facility images of the adjacent environment are acquired, by either a still camera or a video camera. An image file containing a plurality of the images is stored onboard the vehicle. During that travel, the location of the vehicle is determined. Upon occurrence of a predefined incident, such as encountering an obstacle or impacting an object, an incident message is transmitted wirelessly from the vehicle to a remote management computer. The incident message contains an indication of the type of incident, an indication of a location of the vehicle, and the plurality of the images. The remote management computer responds to the incident message by providing a notification about the incident to one or more persons. The contents of the incident message enables the person notified to take corrective action.

System and method for gathering video data related to operation of an autonomous industrial vehicle

Operation of an industrial vehicle, such as one that lifts and transports loads, is controlled based on the weight of a removable battery. A control method involves reading a battery weight value from an electronic memory attached to a battery. That battery weight value is compared to a specified battery weight value for the industrial vehicle. The operation of the industrial vehicle is restricted to less than the normal operating characteristics when the battery weight value is less than the specified battery weight value. For example, the height to which a load can be raised is limited or the speed at which the industrial vehicle is limited when a battery installed on the industrial vehicle weighs less than the specified battery weight for effectively counterbalancing a load.

Controlling operation of an industrial vehicle based on battery weight

A propulsion drive system is operated by a controller to propel an industrial vehicle along a path in an unmanned mode. An autonomous processor module sends commands to the vehicle controller in response to messages received via a communication network from a guidance and navigation system. The guidance and navigation system transmits a message over the communication network, wherein that message contains a first numerical value specifying the velocity and a second numerical value specifying an amount that the propulsion drive system is to turn a wheel of the industrial vehicle. The message also specifies a maximum speed limit and indicators commanding that a load carried by the industrial vehicle be raised and lowered. The autonomous processor module transmits a feedback message indicate actual vehicle operating parameters to the guidance and navigation system.

Communication technique by which an autonomous guidance system controls an industrial vehicle

A method is described for maintaining silver cadmium oxide alloy tips of an electrical contactor clean and substantially free of contamination involving operating the electrical contactor normally, under its regular working operation, in a cold switching mode, and at intervals of time, separating the tips under a load condition. A procedure is described also for determining at what interval the tips should be separated under the load condition. Apparatus is described that will operate to perform this method automatically.

System of maintaining clean electrical contacts

The present invention features an electric motor control system combination with at least one electric motor having a field winding and an armature winding connected in series. The system also includes a first power terminal, a second power terminal, a current-limiting resistor, and a current sensor. The current-limiting resistor and the current sensor are connected in series between the first power terminal and the second power terminal. A contactor has a contact operable to shunt the current-limiting resistor. A microcomputerized control connected to the contactor and the current sensor governs the contractor to shunt the current-limiting resistor when the electric motor is not in a plugged condition. The contactor is operative when the current sensor detects a substantially zero current through the electric motor. The microcomputerized control continuously regulates power being supplied to the electric motor and provides optimum armature current in all operative modes of the electric motor, including a braking mode. This results in smooth braking that is accomplished with a minimum of armature heating.

A travel speed limiting control system for lift trucks, particularly of the 'orderpicker' type, having an extendible mast, is disclosed. The truck travel speed which the operator can command is limited by factors including load weight, load elevation, heading angle and direction of truck travel (forward or reverse) . Optionally, other factors may be involved, such as lateral tilt and load moment. An algorithm including the desired input factors is continually processed by an on-board microcomputer to provide an instantaneous speed limit signal. In addition to its normal operating mode, the microcomputer is also arranged to operate in a 'learn' mode, whereby it runs through the ranges of various input signals and develops a set of stored values which indicate the allowable ranges of the inputs, as well as offset or bias values which compensate for manufacturing tolerances occurring in the components of the system.
