A modular barrier system enables demountable outdoor rinks&#x2014;typically for ice hockey, or ice skating, or street hockey. A rink includes multiple panels, each having a factory-attached link. These panels are linearly disposed, adjacent to one another, to form a piecewise continuous boundary wall enclosing a desired area. Attaching one link to the next, typically via insertion of a thumbscrew, connects the panels into a robust assembly. Both straight and curved panels are provided, thereby enabling a rink with round corners. Each panel includes a shell molded from plastic resin, and has a hollow interior which can be filled with water (or other ballast).

Adjustable focus spectacles using fluid displacement lens units with bipolar membrane distension and a non-circular periphery. The lens unit includes front and rear mounting rings, front and rear distensible membranes respectively mounted on the two mounting rings, a ring shaped flexible seal disposed between the two mounting rings along their peripheries, and front and rear clamping rings for respectively clamping the flexible seal to the front and rear mounting rings. The sealed space defined by the two distensible membranes and the flexible seal is filled with an optical fluid. The two mounting rings are pivotally coupled together at a pivot located along the periphery of the lens unit. A biasing spring is affixed to the front and rear mounting rings at a second location on their periphery to urge them away from each other. An assembly process for the lens unit is also disclosed.

Adjustable focus spectacles with non-circular lenses

A portable ice rink includes a wall formed of multiple wall members linearly disposed adjacent to one another to form a piecewise continuous wall that encloses a desired area, and also includes a chain of links disposed on the outside of the wall members for reinforcement. The rink may further include a waterproof tarp extending underneath the wall members and folded upwards along the outer side of the wall, with its edge tied to the change of links. The tarp can contain water which then freezes to form a skating surface. Curved wall members are provided to form a rink with round corners. Each wall member is a discrete unit, made of molded plastic, and having a hollow interior which can be filled with water (or other ballast). Each wall member is designed with stiffening features to maintain the flatness of its inner surface after filling.

A removable attachment for eyeglasses, where the attachment, when mounted on a parent pair of eyeglasses, substantially completely covers the front and periphery of the parent frame, such that the combination appears to be a pair of dedicated sunglasses instead of ordinary eyeglasses with an attachment. The attachment is held to the parent eyeglasses by magnets. The bridge of the attachment includes ball joints that allow the attachment to fold for storage while not in use.

A non-coring needle that includes a sharpened and hardened tip having a tapered back region against which a length of tubing is pressed and welded, brazed or soldered. A Luer Lock hub may be attached to the other end of the tubing.

A detachable lens for variable focus spectacles, the lens including a plurality of magnets in a groove on its rear surface for holding the lens to the spectacles. An interlocking boss keeps the lens from sliding off the spectacles, and a locating tab provides a means for assuring that the lens is installed on the correct side of the spectacles and with the proper orientation.

Adjustable focus eyeglasses where the range of adjustment can be moved. That is, if a pair of adjustable focus eyeglasses have a range of 0 diopters to 2.75 diopters (to provide a 2.75 D ADD for reading for an emmetrope), this invention could, for example, permit the user to move the range from 0 D to 2.75 D to 2.00 D to 4.75 D so as to accommodate a short term change in the user's distance vision requirement. Each eye can be adjusted independently.

Adjustable focus spectacles

A rotary actuation mechanism for variable focus spectacles is disclosed. The spectacles include two variable focus lens units and a bridge therebetween. The actuation mechanism includes a rotary cam rotatably mounted on the bridge, a fingerwheel attached to the rotary cam to rotate it, a cam follower disposed in slidable contact with the peripheral surface of the rotary cam, and two elongated couplers pivotally mounted on the bridge. The peripheral surface of the rotary cam is spiral shaped to transfer the rotation of the rotary cam into a linear, or pivoting, motion of the cam follower. Each coupler has a proximate end in contact with or attached to the cam follower and a distal end coupled to a linkage anchor of a respective lens unit, to transfer the motion of the cam follower into simultaneous pivoting motions of the linkage anchors thereby adjusting the focal lengths of the lens units.

Structure and method for face form retention in eyeglasses and eyeglass frames for substantially preventing creep from altering the face form. The method comprises providing an eyeglass frame front having a space in the bridge region for receiving a metallic strip, providing the metallic strip having a width approximately matching the width of the space in the eyeglass frame front and a thickness that is less than its width, and fastening the metallic strip in the space in the bridge region so that the width of the metallic strip rigidifies the eyeglass frame front to retain its face form. Various specific methods and structures are disclosed.

Structure and method for face form retention in plastic eyeglasses and eyeglass frames

A magnetically attached spectacle lens wherein magnets are embedded in the rear surface of the lens in a circumferential groove near the periphery of the lens. The magnets are spaced around the periphery of the lens, and are held in the groove by preferably a wicked in cyanoacrylate adhesive. The spaces between the magnets are preferably filled with a light activated potting compound. Prior to installation of the magnets, the inside of the groove is painted, preferably by spraying, with an opaque paint whereby the magnets are hidden from the view of onlookers. During fabrication, after magnet installation, any overspray from the painting step is removed by using a solvent preferably applied by moistened swabs or cloth.

Variable focus spectacles which comprise i) a focus module that includes two variable focus lens sections, said sections each including a first fixed plastic lens and an adjustable focus liquid lens, and ii) a second fixed plastic lens that preferably includes most or all of the optical power needed by the intended wearer to correct his/her distance vision. The second fixed plastic lens is preferably attached to the focus module by magnetic attraction.

Variable focus spectacles

An actuating mechanism for spectacles which include two variable focus lens units. The mechanism mounts on the spectacle bridge; and includes two elongated drive levers mounted near opposite ends of the bridge, each extending toward the other end of the bridge. The free end of each driving lever is connected to its corresponding lens unit through a linkage. The driving levers are caused to rotate simultaneously, but in opposite directions, by a cam that is driven by a sliding member that slides along the bridge. By positioning the sliding member as desired, the spectacles wearer causes the cam to rotate, thereby causing the driving levers to rotate, and both lens units to change focal length.
