A system securing inter-process communication (IPC) based on trust includes a user quota mechanism to provide resource management of IPC's. A single user is allowed to allocate a fixed amount of objects less than a system maximum. A trusted IPC mechanism mediates access to IPC objects by employing signed executables signed by a key and containing a list of trusted keys. A trust relationship is used among a set of subjects connected to an IPC to determine whether communication can be carried out between processes. In order for the processes to communicate via an IPC, either they have to trust each other, or a kernel must trust one process and that process must also trust the other process.

Methodologies to secure inter-process communication based on trust

A security architecture is provided for accessing security components associated with an operating system. The security architecture is generally comprised of: a policy tree storing a plurality of security policies, where each security policy is define as at least one system call which correlates to a security operation and a corresponding security component for executing the security operation; and a policy manager adapted to intercept system calls from the operating system and operable to determine an applicable response based on the policy tree. The policy tree and the policy manager reside in a protected memory space of the execution environment.

Security architecture and mechanism to access and use security components in operating system

Access control is mediated by a set of 2-tuple labels or attributes which are associated with subject and object entities, respectively. Subject entitles, such as processes, have separate read and write attributes, while object entities, such as files, have separate integrity and write control attributes. The system implements a set of rules to provide both integrity control and confidentiality protection. Specifically, write operations to an object are inhibited where the subject's write attribute is lower than the write control attribute of the object. Read operations from an object are inhibited where the subject's read attribute is lower than the object's integrity attribute. When a subject reads from an object having a lower integrity level than the subject's read attribute, the subject's read attribute is demoted.

Mandatory access control scheme with active objects

A mandatory access control method for securing an operating system is presented. A first integrity subject reads a first object. The first integrity subject attempts to read a second object. It is determined that a conflict exists between the first and second objects. At least one security rule is applied to the conflict between the first and the second objects.

Mandatory access control (MAC) method

An entertainment device is provided for adaptively tuning to a content signal. The entertainment device includes a receiver responsive to content signals provided to the entertainment device. A selected channel of the receiver provides an output signal to an output terminal of the automobile entertainment device. A data processor is operably linked to the receiver for receiving a signal index of the content signal. The data processor is responsive to a predetermined signal index for actuating the receiver to select the specific channel corresponding to the predetermined signal index. A memory stores the predetermined signal index in accordance with an operator preference. Thus, the predetermined signal index enables the entertainment device to adaptively adjust to an operator's preferred content.

A global positioning system (GPS) is provided for displaying static cartographical data in accordance with a GPS signal and integrating dynamically updated data during display. The GPS system includes a receiver responsive to the global positioning signal. The receiver has a first communication module responsive to a signal of a content provider. The signal of the content provider defines dynamic content. The receiver has a data processor for integrating the dynamic content with the static cartographical data. A display device of the GPS system displays the integrated cartographical data and dynamic content. In this way, the dynamic content is provided to the global positioning system to alert an operator of traffic patterns and hospitality venues in relation to displayed static cartographical data.

A vehicle data archive system is provided. An instrumentation interface receives at least one sensory data signal of the vehicle. A memory stores the at least one sensory data signal. A first transponder responds to a periodic provider signal of a trusted third party (TTP)/service provider for creating a corresponding shared encryption key, which is used to generate a digital signature from the stored data, the signature may be stored with the data or returned to the TTP/service provider. The signature is used to authenticate the data stored in the archive system. The encryption value used to generate the signature may be stored locally in the data archive or obtained from the TTP/service provider. The data in the data archive may also be stored without encryption. The system also allows an authorized user to delete a portion of the stored encrypted sensory data.

An entertainment device is provided. The entertainment device includes a main processing station which provides an output signal. The main processing station includes a control interface. A front panel is removably connected to the control interface. The front panel includes a memory for storing multimedia content. The front panel provides control parameters to the main processing station. The content of the memory is provided to the main audio processing station for output. In addition, the front panel processes and presents the stored multimedia content as a portable device. Both control parameters and multimedia (e.g. audio or video) information may be exchanged between the front panel and the main processing station. The front panel also includes a telecommunications device and an alarm transponder.

An electronic news receiving device receives text data for an electronic edition of a newspaper in the evening and audibly reads the newspaper to the user the next day. The newsreader includes a receiver which receives an electronic edition of a newspaper transmitted by a transmitter at an electronic news preparer's facility. The news preparer may mark words that do not conform to conventional letter-to-sound rules with a pronunciation flag and provide pronunciation data for the words with the electronic edition of the newspaper. The data may be compressed by providing a dictionary in the news receiving device and, at the preparer's facility, translating each word into a dictionary address. The transmission channel may include a telephone line, the vertical blanking interval of a television signal, a cable television channel, an AM/FM subcarrier signal or a satellite channel. The received electronic edition of the newspaper is processed by a section filter to retain desired sections of the newspaper and to discard unwanted sections. The retained news articles are stored in memory. A text-to-speech converter produces an audible output corresponding to the spoken text of the news articles. A user can input one or more keywords to cause the device to selectively read articles containing the keywords. The text to speech converter of the device uses rules and a dictionary to provide syntactic and semantic prosody for morpheme reconstructions. The user may determine which articles are read and may vary the rate at which articles are read using manual controls or spoken commands.

Electronic news reception apparatus that selectively retains sections

A method of searching a database having a plurality of objects is provided. Each object includes attributes and, for each attribute, a number of values. A query specifies two attributes and a maximum distance. A respective set of ranges is established for each object that has a value for the first attribute. Each set includes a range for each value of the first attribute. Each range is defined by minimum and maximum location values. A test range is established for one of the ranges. The test range has values equal to the minimum and maximum values of one of the ranges. The test range is adjusted, if necessary, so that it includes one of the values of the second attribute of the corresponding object. The test range is added to a group of ranges corresponding to the object if the minimum and maximum test values do not differ from one another by more than the maximum distance. The steps of (1) establishing a test range, (2) adjusting the test range and (3) adding the test range to the group are repeated for each range in the set of ranges corresponding to the one object. Steps (1) to (3) are repeated for each value of the second attribute of each respective object for which a set of ranges is established. Each object for which the group of ranges includes at least one range is identified as being found by the searching.
