A digital display of an active window is provided. An application, separate from the application providing the digital display, is capable of identifying an artifact in the active window of the digital display without a priori knowledge or an application programming interface to the application providing the digital display. The artifacts may be alpha-numeric artifacts or non-alpha-numeric artifacts. The active window may be examined in multiple dimensions including 2 dimensions, 3 dimensions or more. Alpha-numeric artifacts, once identified, are pre-processed to remove anti-aliasing to allow for processor optical recognition.

The speech recognition engine combines multiple, different statistical language models to allow a single instance of a speech recognition engine to recognize words applicable to a first group of users and a second group of users where the second group of users is a subset of the first group of users. Planning alternative SS7 networks is a complex task requiring assistance from an intelligent planning tool. The tool includes at least one planning database containing information on network traffic, component locations, and component connectivity. A load module determines peak load for each STP in the core network. A forecast module determines equipment capacity exhaustion for each STP, network database, and core link during each study period and determines network costs based on peak loads and an alternative network design provided by a user. A graphical user interface guides the user through a sequence of design steps, each step having to be correctly completed before the next step in the sequence is started. The sequence of steps may include permitting changes to the core network, permitting changes to the number of POPs and DBs, rehoming elements left disconnected from STPs, assigning SSPs to POPs, assigning SSPs to DBs, and permitting voluntary rehomes.

Planning alternative SS7 networks is a complex task requiring assistance from an intelligent planning tool. The tool provides a method for forecasting service loads including automatically obtaining network traffic information from the network. Service loads are estimated based on a first set of network traffic information and service descriptions. Correction factors are calculated for service loads based on a second set of network traffic information. The correction factors are applied to estimated service loads to determine peak loads for each STP in the core network based on network traffic, component locations, and component connectivity.

An architecture for providing interactive broadband products and services uses existing cable and telephone plant. The architecture includes a central office switch in communication with a head-end server and a Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) device such as, for example, a modem emulator, data terminal, set-top terminal or personal computer. The CPE device is provided in communication with the head-end server via cable plant for downstream broadcasts and is further provided in communication with a central office switch via telephone plant for upstream signaling and downstream control messages.
