An assembly for housing optical components includes sides formed of an optically transmissive material, such as anti-reflective glass. Optical energy interacts with optical components retained within the assembly via the optically transmissive material. Collimated lens assemblies, which are attached to optical fibers, are adhesively attached to the optically transmissive sides. This assembly is especially amenable to an automated assembly process because it allows easy alignment of the collimated lens assembly with optical components retained within the assembly, and adherence of the collimated lens assembly to the optically transmissive side thereafter.

Planar fiber optical housing

An optical system is provided with an optical assembly and a wavelength division multiplexer surface for transmitting a light beam. The optimal alignment of these light beams is accomplished by adjusting a steering device, which includes an optical wedge or a universal coupling, until the light path of the transmitted light beam through the optical assembly aligns with the light path of the transmitted light beam through the wavelength division multiplexing surface.

Optical alignment system

A reflective Faraday-based optical system is formed to include a partially transmissive optical reflector so that a portion of the optical signal propagating through the system will not be reflected but instead used as an input signal to a monitoring system. The partially transmissive reflector is configured to transmit only a relatively small portion of the optical signal (about 1-10%) so that the performance of the system is not affected. The optical monitoring arrangement may comprise one or more photodetectors, optical fibers, or other optical components for capturing the transmitted signal and converting into an electrical representation that can be evaluated to monitor the power in the optical signal.

A structure allowing multiple optical paths through an optical isolator or the like with substantially no interaction. A lens collimates light from a first multiple fiber optic path termination. The collimated light is processed by an optical isolator unit or another optical processing unit such as a coupler. The processed light is reimaged onto a second multiple fiber optic path termination. Preferably, the optical paths in the first termination are in one-to-one correspondence with the optical paths in the second termination.
