A method of controlling cooling water treatment may involve measuring operating data of one or more downstream heat exchangers that receive cooling water from the cooling tower. For example, the inlet and outlet temperatures of both the hot and cold streams of a downstream heat exchanger may be measured. Data from the streams passing through the heat exchanger may be used to determine a heat transfer efficiency for the heat exchanger. The heat transfer efficiency can be trended over a period of time and changes in the trend detected to identify cooling water fouling issues. Multiple potential causes of the perceived fouling issues can be evaluated to determine a predicted cause. A chemical additive selected to reduce, eliminate, or otherwise control the cooling water fouling can be controlled based on the predicted cause of the fouling.

Cooling water monitoring and control system

A method of controlling a chemical reaction is disclosed. The method may include feeding a solution at a first flow rate into a reactor and detecting a sound in the reactor using a sound sensor that is adjacent to the reactor. The sound sensor may convert the sound into a sound signal. After the sound signal is acquired, it is compared to a stored sound signal or a stored sound threshold to detect a reaction event. The method may include adjusting the flow rate of solutions into the reactor in response to the reaction event.

For example, the inlet and outlet temperatures of both the hot and cold streams of a downstream heat exchanger may be measured, optionally along with a flow rate of the cooling water stream passing through the heat exchanger. Data from the streams passing through the heat exchanger may be used to determine a heat transfer efficiency for the heat exchanger. The heat transfer efficiency can be trended over a period of time and changes in the trend detected to identify cooling water fouling issues. A chemical additive selected to reduce, eliminate, or otherwise control the cooling water fouling can be controlled based on the changes in heat transfer efficiency detected at the downstream heat exchanger.

An optical sensor may include a housing, a printed circuit board, an optical emitter, and an optical detector. The housing can define a channel configured to receive a transparent tubing line through which fluid can flow during operation. The housing can have multiple optical pathways, including a primary optical pathway transecting the channel, a light emission optical pathway, and a light detection optical pathway. The optical emitter and optical detector can each be mounted on the printed circuit board. Further, the housing may be positioned on the printed circuit board with the optical emitter aligned to emit light into the light emission optical pathway and the optical detector aligned to receive light from the light detection optical pathway.

A pressure-actuated floor mat, mattress or chair pressure sensor is enclosed within a flexible protective envelope that is provided with active electronic devices that can monitor the state of the sensor but which can also wirelessly transmit signals carrying information from the sensor-detecting electronics. Radio signals carrying information about the sensor are transduced or emitted from a small antenna within, or attached to the one of the envelopes surfaces. A receiver receives the signals emitted from the antenna and relays the information to a remote patient monitoring system is realized by the electronics and sensor within a disposable protective envelope.

An optical interface is provided to supplement an electrical interface between a main circuit board ( ) and a mezzanine circuit board ( ) that is mounted above the main circuit board. The mezzanine circuit board is mounted generally parallel to, and above the main circuit board. In between the two circuit boards is provided an optical interface. A light source ( ) is mounted to one of the circuit boards and a complementary photo detector ( ) is mounted on the other circuit board in a manner such that the photo detector receives light from the light source. Two optical interfaces are preferred for two-way communication between the main circuit board and the mezzanine circuit board. The light source is preferably a laser and the photo detector is preferably a photo diode. The optical interface provides a high speed interconnect to increase conductivity and functionality between the main circuit board and the mezzanine circuit board.

An electronic system for networking, switching or computing includes a backplane-based interconnection system ( ). The system includes a backplane ( ) with a plurality of traces coupled to slots for receiving circuit packs ( ). The backplane traces are configured to form point-to-point connections ( ) from one slot of the backplane to every other slot of the backplane. A hub circuit ( ) is provided on each circuit pack for coupling the circuit pack to the point-to-point connections in the backplane. Circuit packs communicate via direct connections over the point-to-point connections or indirectly by sending traffic through point-to-point connections and hub circuits.

The scanning free space optical broadband access network uses LASERs to carry high-speed data streams between a central location and a number of subscribers served from that location. High-speed digital data modulates the LASERs in both directions, allowing a virtual MAN to be created. A few dozen subscribers share a single virtual pipe with several hundred Mbps band-width available. Beam scanning techniques at a central hub permit a single LASER and optical assembly to serve many customers.

An enclosure includes spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall, rear wall, and top cover each forming an RF tight seal with the sidewalls, and defining separate chambers for a plurality of circuit packs. The edges of the sidewalls, bottom wall and top cover at the entrance to each chamber are configured to form an RF tight seal with the faceplate of an installed circuit pack. A fluid for cooling the circuit pack enters each chamber and a baffle allows the fluid to escape while being resistant to the transmission of RF energy. Surfaces of the sidewalls that are interior to each chamber are able to disrupt and absorb a substantial portion of the RF energy radiating from the enclosed circuit pack and thereby minimize the level of RF energy within the chamber.

A fiber optical array with precision fiber and positioning and a process for manufacturing such an array. The position of the ends of the optical fibers depends upon placement within a target that has been lithographed using highly precise lithography similar to that used in VLSI integrated circuits. The placement of an end with its core within its target is performed with the aid of microscopes and micro-manipulators. Once an end is in the proper location, ultraviolet curable adhesive is used to permanently fix its position precisely. Arrays having positional precision to within 1 micrometer are achievable by this invention.

An exemplary packet processing apparatus where a large number of comparisons can be made concurrently in bit-parallel fashion by partitioning the comparison functionality to two optoelectronic integrated circuits, and interconnecting the two circuits using free space optics. An illustrative photonic system implementation uses free-space optical apparatus to effect a low loss, crossover interconnection of two-dimensional arrays of switching nodes comprising, for example, symmetric self electro-optic effect devices (S-SEEDs). Several low loss beam conbination techniques are used to direct multiple arrays of beams to an S-SEED array, and to redirect a reflected output beam array to a subsequent node stage.
