A method for geosteering while drilling a well in a subterranean formation using a downhole assembly having a toolface comprises measuring at least one motion-related downhole parameter relative to the toolface angle so as to generate azimuthally-associated data, using the azimuthally-associated data to assess formation anisotropy, and using the anisotropy assessment to manually or automatically steer a well while drilling the well. The motion-related downhole parameter may relate to motion of an asymmetric bit or bent housing or bent housing section. The downhole parameter may be selected from the group consisting of angular velocity, angular acceleration, tangential acceleration, radial acceleration, axial acceleration, cross-axial acceleration, total acceleration, high-frequency torsional oscillation (HFTO) severity, band-pass-filtered root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration, band-pass-filtered peak acceleration and the azimuthally-associated data may comprise azimuthally-associated measurements of any of the motion-related parameters and/or azimuthally-associated calculations of compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, stress, and fracture measurement.

An integrated data recorder may be positioned within a slot in a tool. The integrated data recorder includes a sensor package that includes one or more drilling dynamics sensors, a processor in data communication with the one or more drilling dynamics sensors, a memory module in data communication with the one or more drilling dynamics sensors, a wireless communications module in data communication with the processor, and an electrical energy source in electrical communication with the memory module, the one or more drilling dynamics sensors, and the processor.

Wireless integrated data recorder

A drilling dynamics data recorder is positioned within a slot in a downhole tool. The drilling dynamics data recorder may include a sensor package, the sensor package including one or more drilling dynamics sensors and a processor, the processor in data communication with the one or more drilling dynamics sensors. The drilling dynamics data recorder may also include a memory module, the memory module in data communication with the one or more drilling dynamics sensors and a communication port, the communication port in data communication with the memory module. The drilling dynamics data recorder may further include an electrical energy source, the electrical energy source in electrical communication with the memory module, the one or more drilling dynamics sensors, and the processor.

Drilling dynamics data recorder

A system includes a sensor carrier and an integrated data recorder. The sensor carrier includes an outer sub body and an inner sub body. The inner sub body is coupled to the outer sub body by a support leg. The inner sub body includes a recess formed therein. The sensor carrier includes a flow path defined as the space between the outer sub body, the inner sub body, and the support leg. The integrated data recorder is positioned within the recess of the inner sub body such that the integrated data recorder is substantially at the centerline of the sensor carrier. The integrated data recorder includes a sensor package including one or more drilling dynamics sensors, a processor, a memory module, and an electrical energy source.

Integrated centerline data recorder

A steering tool for use in a wellbore may comprise a tool housing having a bore and containing a steering cylinder, a steering blade, and a ring valve configured to control fluid flow to the steering cylinder. The ring valve may include a gear housing, a manifold fluidly coupling the bore to the steering cylinder, a valve seat, a valve carrier circumferentially supporting the valve seat, an upper valve housing mechanically coupled to the gear housing, a lower valve housing mechanically coupled to the upper valve housing and reciprocably coupled to the valve carrier, and at least one biasing means positioned between the valve carrier and the lower valve housing and configured to urge the valve carrier away from the lower valve housing.

An inductive coupler includes a first transceiver electrically coupled to a first coil through a first tuning circuit. The inductive coupler may also include a second transceiver electrically coupled to a second coil through a second tuning circuit, where the second coil is positioned substantially concentric with the first coil.

A method for controlling a downhole steerable tool, such as a rotary steerable system (RSS), in a drilling system that also includes a rotating drillstring and a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system comprises encoding an original command for the tool into an encoded signal consisting of modulations of the drillstring rotation rate, transmitting the encoded command by modulating the drillstring rotation rate, measuring the drillstring rotation rate at the tool and decoding the encoded command so as to generate a tool-decoded command, separately measuring the drillstring rotation rate and decoding the encoded command from the separate downhole-measurements so as to generate a separately downhole-decoded command, transmitting the separately downhole-decoded command to the uphole location, comparing the separately downhole-decoded command to the original command, and taking corrective action if the two commands are different.

Surface recognition and downlink receiver

A method may include communicating a command into a wellbore from the surface. The method may include determining a command to be sent to a downhole tool, and translating the command into a message, the message including a sequence of codes. The method may include rotating the drill string substantially at the set point RPM for a predetermined duration and measuring the rotation rate of the drill string. The method may include identifying the received set point RPM and rotating the drill string consistent with a first code value of a first code of the message as encoded. The method may also include decoding the first code and rotating the drill string consistent with a second code value of a second code of the message as encoded. The method may also include decoding the second code, identifying the command from at least one of the decoded first and second code and executing the command.

System and method for downlink communication

A bottomhole assembly may include a downhole motor and bearing assembly. The downhole motor may include a rotor and stator. The bearing assembly may include a bearing mandrel. The bearing mandrel may be coupled to the rotor by a transmission shaft. The bottomhole assembly may include one or more sensors positioned in the bearing mandrel, transmission shaft, or rotor. The bottomhole assembly may include a conductor that passes through one or more of the bearing mandrel, transmission shaft, and the rotor from the sensor to a communications package.

Wired motor for realtime data

A drilling assembly includes a straight housing in which a mud motor assembly is mounted. The mud motor includes a rotor that rotates within a stator. The rotor has an axial centerline substantially parallel with the housing. A drivetrain is coupled between the rotor and a driveshaft. The driveshaft is coupled to a drill head. The driveshaft has a centerline that is non-coincident with (i.e., offset or angled) the axial centerline. The angle between the driveshaft centerline and the axial centerline may be fixed or variable. The angle may be variable in response to an axial force, imparted to the rotor, that is transferred to the driveshaft through the drivetrain.
