The present invention relates to monolithic bodies, uses thereof and processes for the preparation thereof. Certain embodiments of the present invention relate to the use of a monolithic body in the preparation of a radioactive substance, for example a radiopharmaceutical, as part of a microfluidic flow system and a process for the preparation of such a monolithic body.

System for radiopharmaceutical production

An integrated gel based microfluidic sample processing device, suitable for forensic investigations at the scene of a crime, including a substrate having a plurality of micro-channels to form at least a DNA extraction chamber in fluidic cooperation with an amplification chamber which in turn is in fluidic cooperation with a separation and detection channel. The micro-channels containing a DNA extraction material and gel based reaction reagents necessary for processing the sample. The device further having electrical contacts for coupling to an external power source and capable of inducing electro-kinetic manipulation of the gel based reagents and DNA extracted from the sample throughout the device.

Microfluidic apparatus and method for DNA extraction, amplification and analysis

A carboxylic acid molecule (R COOH) is subjected to an electric field in a micro-reactor. The molecule decarboxyles to form a radical (R). Two radicals (R) can dimerise to form the product (R&#x2014;R). It is believed that the reaction occurs away from the electrodes used to apply the electric field (but may also occur at the electrode surfaces).

A method of estimating dimensions of an opening () in a body () comprises filling the opening () with a fluid that absorbs an electromagnetic radiation (). The radiation () is transmitted through the body () and through the fluid in the opening (). The intensity of the electromagnetic radiation, after transmission through the fluid, is determined at an area that corresponds to a radiation path through the fluid in the opening. The intensity is used to determine the absorbance of the fluid in the radiation path and consequently the length of the radiation path. In an alternative method, when the depths of the opening are already known, the intensity is used to determine concentration of a chemical in the opening.

A micro-reactor is provided with a mixture of channels having larger cross-sectional areas (') and channels having smaller cross-sectional areas (&#x2032;). The smaller channels (&#x2032;) resist liquid movement driven by hydrostatic force but allow liquid movement driven by electro-osmotic force. Accordingly liquid flow is almost entirely driven by electro-osmotic force. The smaller channels (&#x2032;) are formed by etched grooves which are closed by a planar surface. This allows the cross-sectional areas of the smaller channels to be closely and reproducibly controlled.

A method of controlling liquid movement in a chemical device comprising a porous structure involved applying an electrical potential to generate an electroosmotic force in the porous structure so as to propel a liquid through the porous structure. Also the porous structure is used to resist or prevent flow of a liquid through the porous structure in response to hydrostatic force.

A continuous flow microwave heated digesting system, which is especially useful for digesting samples of materials to be analyzed with an atomic absorption spectrometer (ASS), includes a chamber, a source of microwave radiation into the chamber, thin bore chemical resistant an microwave transmissive tubing within the chamber onto which the microwave radiation impinges to heat contents of the tubing, and a pump or other suitable apparatus or device for passing through the tubing the sample of material to be digested, dispersed in a digesting medium for it, which sample in the digesting medium is in the form of a discrete slug in a carrier liquid. A suitable device is provided for inserting into the carrier liquid, which is usually water, the slug of material to be digested in the digesting liquid and a backpressure controller is also provided to control backpressure on the slug and the carrier liquid n the tubing. By such backpressure control the slug develops bubbles during the time it is being heated and condenses to liquid form upon cooling thereafter. The bubbling action aids digestion of the material to be digested but the bubbles ought to be condensed before analysis of the digested material by an AAS or other analytical apparatus. Such condensation is effected by a cooling apparatus and the digested material in the digesting liquid in the carrier is filtered by a special filter before being analyzed, which protects the backpressure controller and the AAS and improves AAS analytical results.
