Phthalocyanine compounds substituted by from 1 to 8 substituents of formula (&mdash;O&mdash;R&mdash;O&mdash;) wherein R is a 1,2-arylene group are provided. Preferably, the phthalocyanine compounds are substituted by catechol. Additional substituents which may be present include hydrocarlyloxy, hydrocarbylthio, halogen and sulphonic acid or a salt thereof.
