A process including preheating a hydrocarbon feed in a first preheat zone of a convection section, recovering a preheated hydrocarbon stream; heating the preheated hydrocarbon stream in a secondary transferline exchanger, recovering a heated hydrocarbon stream; feeding the heated hydrocarbon stream to a second preheat zone of the convection section to vaporize a portion of heated hydrocarbon stream, recovering a cracking feedstream; cracking hydrocarbons in the cracking feedstream in one or more coils in a radiant section, recovering a cracked hydrocarbon product; and cooling the cracked hydrocarbon product in the secondary transferline exchanger in indirect heat exchange with the preheated hydrocarbon stream, recovering a cooled hydrocarbon product stream.

A process for producing propylene is disclosed, including: fractionating a mixed C4 hydrocarbon stream to recover a first fraction comprising isobutene and a second fraction comprising 2-butene; contacting the first fraction with a first metathesis catalyst in a first metathesis reaction zone; recovering an effluent from the first metathesis reaction zone comprising at least one of ethylene, propylene, unreacted isobutene, C5 olefins, and C6 olefins; contacting the second fraction and the ethylene in the effluent with a second metathesis catalyst in a second metathesis reaction zone; recovering an effluent from the second reaction zone comprising at least one of unreacted ethylene, propylene, unreacted 2-butene, fractionating the effluent from the first metathesis reaction zone and the effluent from the second metathesis reaction zone to recover an ethylene fraction, a propylene fraction, one or more C4 fractions, and a fraction comprising at least one of C5 and C6 olefins.

Propylene via metathesis with low or no ethylene

A process for recovering ethylene is disclosed, the process including: recovering a ethylene-containing stream comprising methane, ethylene, and nitrogen oxides from at least one of an ethylene production process and an ethylene recovery process; separating the ethylene-containing stream via extractive distillation using at least one Chydrocarbon absorbent to produce an overheads fraction comprising methane and nitrogen oxides and a bottoms fraction comprising the at least one Chydrocarbon absorbent and ethylene; wherein the separating comprises operating the extractive distillation at temperatures and pressures sufficient to prevent any substantial conversion of nitrogen oxides to NO.

Absorber demethanizer for FCC process

A process for the selective hydrogenation of the methyl acetylene and propadiene (MAPD) in a propylene rich stream is disclosed wherein the selective hydrogenation is carried out stepwise (a) first in a single pass fixed bed reactor and then (b) in a distillation column reactor containing a supported PdO hydrogenation catalyst which serves as a component of a distillation structure. Conversion and selectivity to propylene in improved over the use of the single pass fixed bed reactor alone.

Process for the removal of MAPD from hydrocarbon streams

A refrigeration system for an ethylene plant uses a low pressure demethanizer and a binary refrigerant comprising a mixture of methane and ethylene or methane and ethane. The refrigeration composition may be constant throughout the system or separators may be used to divide the refrigerant into a methane-rich binary refrigerant and an ethylene- or ethane-rich binary refrigerant.

In an olefins plant for the production and recovery of ethylene and propylene, the hydrogenation of the C.sub.2 acetylenes, the C.sub.3 acetylenes and dienes and the C.sub.4 and heavier acetylenes, dienes and olefins and the selective separation of the resulting products is carried out by the use of various arrangements of one or more reaction distillation columns. These columns contain a hydrogenation catalyst in enriching and stripping sections and concurrently perform a catalytic hydrogenation reaction and a distillation function.

The C.sub.2 to C.sub.5 and heavier acetylenes and dienes in a thermally cracked feed stream are hydrogenated without significantly hydrogenating the C.sub.2 and C.sub.3 olefins. Additionally, the C.sub.4 and heavier olefins may be hydrogenated. Specifically, the cracked gas feed in an olefin plant is hydrogenated in a distillation reaction column containing a hydrogenation catalyst without the necessity of separating the hydrogen out of the feed and without any significant hydrogenation of the ethylene and propylene. A combined reaction-fractionation step known as catalytic distillation hydrogenation is used to simultaneously carry out the reactions and separations while maintaining the hydrogenation conditions such that the ethylene and propylene remain substantially un-hydrogenated and essentially all of the other C.sub.2 and heavier unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated. Any unreacted hydrogen can be separated by a membrane and then reacted with separated C.sub.9 and heavier materials to produce hydrogenated pyrolysis gasoline.

Olefin plant recovery system employing catalytic distillation

A method of processing a cracked gas feedstream containing hydrogen and C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 and heavier hydrocarbons is described using a relatively low pressure as compared to conventional cryogenic separation processes. At pressures below 27 bars, the feedstream is dried and cooled in a series of steps to initially separate out essentially all of the C.sub.6 and heavier hydrocarbons forming a vapor stream containing the hydrogen, the C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 hydrocarbons and at least some of the C.sub.4 and C.sub.5 hydrocarbons. The C.sub.4 and C.sub.5 components act as an absorption liquid to lower the light ends partial pressure permitting the condensation of C.sub.2 and C.sub.3 components at higher temperature levels and permitting the operation at lower pressures. The vapor stream is then further cooled and separated in another series of steps and processed in a demethanizer column in a manner to provide a high pressure hydrogen and methane overhead product and a high recovery of C.sub.2 and C.sub.3 components in the bottoms.

Low pressure chilling train for olefin plants

A low pressure cryogenic process is disclosed for recovering C.sub.2 and heavier hydrocarbons and particularly olefins from a refinery offgas containing hydrogen, methane, nitrogen oxide in addition to the C.sub.2 and heavier hydrocarbons. The conventional high pressures are eliminated and the temperatures are maintained higher than the temperature at which nitrated gums can form while still maintaining high olefin recovery. The feed is deethanized or depropanized to remove the C.sub.4 and heavier hydrocarbons at a temperature above the nitrated gum formation temperature. The overhead is then demethanized in a column using an enriching zone above the rectifying zone with a feed of C.sub.2 or heavier paraffins between these two zones.
