A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler. The assembly has a cartridge body having a support portion with a plurality of staple cavities with openings. There is also a plurality of staples, wherein at least a portion of each the staple is removably stored within a staple cavity. Each the staple is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, and is deformable between an unfired configuration and a fired configuration. The assembly also includes a compressible tissue thickness compensator configured to be captured within the staples. The compressible tissue thickness compensator at least partially covers the staple cavity openings. The compressed tissue thickness compensator is configured to assume different compressed heights within different staples. The compressible tissue thickness compensator comprising a lyophilized foam having an anti-microbial agent embedded therein.

A method of making a packaged antimicrobial suture comprising the steps of providing a containment compartment that is substantially free of an antimicrobial agent; positioning a suture within the containment compartment, said suture comprising one or more surfaces having an antimicrobial agent disposed thereon, said antimicrobial agent being selected from the group consisting of halogenated hydroxyl ethers, acyloxydiphenyl ethers, and combinations thereof; placing the containment compartment having the suture in an outer package; and subjecting the outer package, the containment compartment and the suture to time, temperature and pressure conditions sufficient to transfer an effective amount of the antimicrobial agent from the suture to the containment compartment, while retaining an effective amount of said antimicrobial agent on the suture, thereby substantially inhibiting bacterial colonization on the suture and the containment compartment.

A method for making an antimicrobial suture comprising the steps of positioning an antimicrobial agent source within a package comprising an inner surface, said antimicrobial agent being selected from the group consisting of halogenated hydroxyl ethers, acyloxydiphenyl ethers, and combinations thereof; positioning a medical device within the package; and subjecting the package, the antimicrobial agent source and the medical device to time, temperature and pressure conditions sufficient to vapor transfer an effective amount of the antimicrobial agent from the antimicrobial agent source to the medical device, thereby substantially inhibiting bacterial colonization on the medical device.

Method of preparing an antimicrobial packaged medical device

An antimicrobial composition comprising (a) a cationic surfactant derived from the condensation of fatty acids and esterified dibasic amino acids, such as lauric arginate and (b) an antibiotic, such as of &#x3b2;-lactam antibiotics, polypeptides, quinolones. The composition may be used as a stand alone antimicrobial formulation, or in combination with medical articles or medical devices.

The present invention is directed to compositions containing an acid precursor in amounts effective to inhibit microbial attachment and growth on a surface of a medical device having the composition applied thereto, to films of such compositions and to medical devices having the composition applied to a surface thereof.

Antimicrobial coatings for medical devices

The present invention provides a highly stable formulation having broad spectrum preservative properties. The formulation is an admixture of dialkanol-substituted dimethyhydantoin, one or more isothiazolone compounds, a hydantoin stabilizer, and a hydroxyl solvent. The formulation is highly stable in pH ranges of about 4 to 8. Preferably the active components are dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, chloromethylisothiazolone and methylisothiazolone, and the stabilizer dimethylhydantoin. The formulation has a free formaldehyde content of less than 0.2% and is beneficial for preserving various aqueous compositions, including household and industrial products, and especially personal care products, which require a less acidic pH range than in which isothiazolone is stable in the presence of cationic salts.
