An enzymatic synthesis and composition of oligomers and co-oligomers comprised of &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acids and &#x3b1;-amino acids or peptides is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acid with a specific chiral configuration is linked by an amide linkage to a &#x3b1;-amino acid specific with a specific chiral configuration or linked by an amide linkage to a peptide made up of &#x3b1;-amino acid monomers having identical chiral configurations. Proteolytic enzymes catalyze oligomerization of the &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &#x3b1;-amino acid. The degree and distribution of oligomerization varies upon the type and concentrations of different reaction mixtures utilized and upon the length of allowed reaction time. The resultant oligomers may be provided to animals such as ruminants as bioavailable amino acid supplements that are resistant to degradation in the rumen and other animals such as swine, poultry and aquatic animals.

Enantioselective oligomerization of &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acids and &#x3b1;-amino acids

An enzymatic synthesis and composition of &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &agr;-amino acid or peptide co-oligomers is disclosed wherein a residue of the &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid is linked to a residue of the &agr;-amino acid or peptide by an amide linkage. Proteolytic enzyme papain catalyzes co-oligomerization of the &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &agr;-amino acid. The degree and distribution of oligomerization varies upon the type and concentrations of different reaction mixtures utilized and upon the length of allowed reaction time. The resultant oligomers may be provided to ruminants as bioavailable amino acid supplements that are resistant to degradation in the rumen.

Oligomers and oligomeric segments of alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acids and alpha-amino acids

A process is provided for the combustion of ammonium salts of sulfuric acid contained in aqueous media. More particularly, a reductive combustion process which produces a combustion gas containing a divalent sulfur compound having a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide. The process is suitable for combusting ammonium salts of sulfuric acid produced during manufacture of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid (HMBA) or methionine. The divalent sulfur compounds in the combustion gas may be further converted to other useful sulfur products and recycled for use in the manufacture of HMBA or methionine.

A system for transferring fluid from a filling reservoir to a receiving tank. The system includes a fluid transfer line for conveying fluid from the filling reservoir outlet to the receiving tank inlet, and couplings for selectively connecting the fluid transfer line to a filling reservoir outlet and a receiving tank inlet. The system further includes a vapor return line for conveying vapor from a receiving tank vent to a filling reservoir inlet to simultaneously prevent pressure from building in the tank and a vacuum from developing in the reservoir as fluid is transferred from the reservoir to the tank, and couplings for selectively connecting the vapor return line to the filling reservoir inlet and the receiving tank vent. In addition, the system includes a portable platform adapted for movement to a position near the filling reservoir and the receiving tank, and a pump mounted on the platform for selectively inducing fluid to travel through the fluid transfer line from the filling reservoir to the receiving tank when the reservoir outlet valve and the tank inlet valve are open. The system also includes a compressed gas source in communication with the fluid transfer line for blowing gas through the line to remove residual fluid from the line to prevent the escape of residual fluid and associated odor from the line when the fluid transfer line couplings are uncoupled from the filling reservoir outlet and the receiving tank inlet.
