Various embodiments of an electric motor and electronic control for an electric motor are disclosed. An exemplary electric motor comprises a single-phase brushless permanent magnet electric motor. In exemplary embodiments, the electronic motor control is configured to commutate an electric motor at a frequency other than line frequency, perform pulse width modulation, and drive the electric motor with a drive waveform that approximates the counter-electromotive force of the motor.

Electric motor and motor control

A motor is provided for use in a machine. The motor includes a segmented stator and a resiliently flexible clip. The stator includes a core having spaced apart arms and a yoke. The arms define an opening therebetween, and the yoke spans the opening. The clip is removably retained on the core so as to apply pressure against each arm toward the yoke such that the arms are retained in contact with the yoke.

Connection for motor stator segments

A stator is formed from two stacks of laminations have different outer perimeters to enable electrical motors with different output ratings to be built with a same hub-to-hub distance. The stator includes a first plurality of laminations having a first outer perimeter with at least two flanges with mounting holes, and a second plurality of laminations having a second outer perimeter that is different than the first outer perimeter. The second outer perimeter of the laminations in the second plurality of laminations are configured to enable a portion of an endplate to pass the second plurality of laminations and contact a face of the first plurality of laminations.

Electrical motor with adjustable stator stack height and reduced yoke diameter

An electric motor has been developed that includes a housing to prevent particles from exiting one compartment of the motor, while enabling air flow through another compartment of the motor. The enclosed compartment includes a printed circuit board having a plurality of electronics components to prevent debris produced by a catastrophic failure of an electronic component from escaping the housing. Vents are provided in a separate portion of the housing to enable air to circulate about the primary components of the motor.

A motor is provided for use in a machine. The motor includes a frame having a catch and a mounting ring retained on the frame by the catch. The motor is supported in the machine by the mounting ring.

Capless mounting for motor

A retaining sleeve for retaining magnets inserted therein so that the magnets may be overmolded with a polymer pursuant to the manufacture of a rotor for an electric motor. The retaining sleeve comprising a generally cylindrical portion having an inner peripheral surface concentric about a central axis and a plurality of retaining partitions extending inward from the inner peripheral surface of the generally cylindrical portion, wherein the retaining partitions are configured to at least substantially limit movement of the magnets toward the central axis upon the magnets being inserted in the retaining sleeve at their respective locations inward of the inner peripheral surface of the retaining sleeve and between retaining partitions.

Retaining sleeve for over molding magnets

An electric motor assembly is configured to be mounted within a machine in a selected one of multiple possible motor dispositions corresponding with different motor axis positions. The motor assembly includes an endshield having a pair of opposite generally radially-extending mounting flanges. Each mounting flange presents an engagement portion that includes a plurality of spaced apart, dissimilarly-shaped recesses that extend in a generally common direction. The pair of flanges cooperatively present corresponding sets of like-shaped recesses, each of which is associated with one of the motor dispositions, but only one of the sets of recesses extends entirely through the engagement portions to define a single set of like-shaped fastener-receiving through holes corresponding to the selected motor disposition. A method of manufacturing components for electric motor assemblies configured to be mounted within respective machines in a selected one of multiple possible dispositions is also disclosed.

An electric motor comprises a stator, a rotor, and an interface plate. The interface plate is fixed to the stator and is configured to couple the electric motor to a pump. The interface plate comprises a shaft opening, a cavity, a ventilation passageway, a fluid discharge portion, a drainage passageway, and an upwardly extending surface. The rotor shaft extends horizontally through the shaft opening. The cavity is in communication with the shaft opening. The ventilation passageway extends upward from the cavity and is in communication with the cavity and with the ambient air. The drainage passageway is in communication with and extends downward from the cavity. The drainage passageway is configured to channel liquid downward from the cavity and to the fluid discharge portion. The upwardly extending surface is positioned where the upwardly extending surface will inhibit liquid from migrating from the fluid discharge portion to the stator.

A horizontal axis washing machine includes an integrated motor and controller assembly. The controller is mounted to the electric motor with the controller positioned under a tub of the washing machine. The tub provides drip protection for the controller during operation of the washing machine. Additional embodiments include a motor and controller assembly in which a heat producing component of the controller is thermally coupled to a heat sink. The heat sink is positioned on an endshield of the electric motor and/or external to a housing of the motor controller. A stator of the electric motor can include one or more magnet wires attached directly to a connector for the motor controller.

Integrated motor and controller assemblies for horizontal axis washing machines

An appliance circuitry housing is designed so a circuit board can be attached directly to the housing interior with circuit board electric terminals being accessible from the housing exterior. An integral door on the housing exterior can be pivoted to a closed position over the electric terminals and connected plugs. A plurality of housing legs with slots engage in openings in the appliance to secure the housing to the appliance. A resilient latch on the housing exterior holds the housing in its attached position to the appliance.

A rotor assembly is comprised of a rotor core and at least one magnet. The rotor core has a support protrusion projecting radially outwardly from the core exterior surface. The at least one magnet is positioned on the support protrusion and is supported in a radially outward spaced relation from the core exterior surface. The radially outward spacing defines a radial spacing between the core exterior surface and the at least one magnet. A connection is located in the radial spacing and holds the at least one magnet to the core exterior surface. A method of assembling the rotor core assembly comprises the steps of providing the rotor core with a support protrusion projecting radially outwardly from the core exterior surface. Providing at least one magnet. Positioning the at least one magnet on the support protrusion so that the at least one magnet is supported in a radially outward spaced relation from the core exterior surface and defines a radial spacing between the at least one magnet and the core exterior surface, and providing a connection in the radial spacing that holds the at least one magnet to the core exterior surface.

Permanent magnet rotor design

A self-locking wiring grommet that is inserted into a notch at an edge of a clamshell housing of an electrical device has a pair of resilient arms that flex toward each other as the grommet is inserted into the notch and then spring outwardly away from each other to engage with a perimeter flange at the edge of the housing to hold the grommet in the housing notch without the need for separate fasteners.
