A diesel engine system includes a diesel engine, a NOx control device downstream of the engine, an exhaust line between the engine and the NOx control device, a bypass line connected to the exhaust line at a first end upstream of the NOx control device, and a bypass valve connecting the exhaust line and the bypass line, the bypass valve permitting flow through the exhaust line to the NOx control device when in an open position and preventing flow through the exhaust line to the NOx control device and permitting flow through the exhaust line to the bypass line when in a closed position. A controller can arranged to control opening and dosing of the bypass valve, such as when an operating condition of the engine reaches a predetermined operating condition.

Diesel engine system and method and apparatus for handling diesel engine exhaust

An engine arrangement includes an engine, an exhaust line downstream of the engine, an aftertreatment device in the exhaust line, and a conduit between a source of fluid and a point in the exhaust line upstream of the aftertreatment device. A method is also disclosed.

Engine with exhaust cooling and method

A method of turbo-charger surge detection may include the steps of measuring a rate of air flow through a turbo-charger compressor, measuring a temperature of the air flow, calculating a standard mass flow rate of the air flow at the rate and the temperature, measuring a pressure ratio across the turbo-charger compressor, calculating a surge mass flow rate at a surge line of the compressor at the pressure ratio, comparing the standard mass flow rate to the surge mass flow rate, and reducing an EGR flow or reducing the pressure ratio by opening a vane of the compressor if the standard mass flow rate is lower than the surge mass flow rate.

Turbo-charger surge detection

In a method of maintaining temperature of engine exhaust gas from cylinders of a multi-cylinder engine () with a desired range, exhaust gas from a first group of cylinders () including at least one cylinder is routed to at least one of an EGR system () and an exhaust system (). Exhaust gas from a second group of cylinders () including at least one of the cylinders is routed to the exhaust system (). Routing of the exhaust gas from the first group of cylinders between the EGR system and the exhaust system is controlled to maintain a temperature of engine exhaust gas within a desired range. Engine and method of maintaining engine exhaust temperature

An EGR recovery system and method includes calculating a transient volume of EGR sufficient to maintain NOx emitted by an engine below a predetermined level during a period of transient operation of said engine, supplying an actual volume of EGR during said period of transient operation, measuring said actual level of EGR during said period of transient operation, calculating an EGR deficit between said transient volume of EGR and said actual of volume of EGR during said period of transient operation, integrating said EGR deficit over said period of transient operation to calculate a deficit volume of EGR, calculating a following steady-state volume of EGR sufficient to maintain NOx emitted by said engine of said engine below said predetermined level during a following period of substantially steady-state operation of said engine, and supplying said following steady-state volume of EGR plus said deficit volume of EGR during said following period of substantially steady-state operation of said engine.

EGR recovery system and method

In preferred embodiments, to, e.g., eliminate condensation build-up in the intake manifold and power cylinders, a charge-air cooler (CAC) and/or EGR cooler 'bypass' system is provided that can, e.g., control the intake manifold temperature (IMT) above the dew-point temperature of the boosted air. Preferably, a two-port, single valve-body type valve is provided that proportionally controls the amount of charge-air that is 'bypassed' (e.g., not cooled), while simultaneously diverting the charge-air cooler return, preferably, inversely proportionally.

Cooler bypass valve system and method

A heating element protection apparatus for a mass-flow sensor may include a heating element disposed in a gas, a gas temperature sensor disposed in the gas to sense a temperature of the gas, a slope detector to measure a slope of the temperature as power is supplied to the heating element, and a heating element controller to supply power to the heating element to replace heat dissipated by the gas. The heating element controller may detect a temperature of the heating element and may supply power to the heating element based on the heating element temperature and the gas temperature, and the power may be switched off for a predetermined period of time if a magnitude of the slope is greater than a reference magnitude.

Mass-flow sensor heating element protection method and apparatus

An exhaust gas recirculation method and apparatus adapted for use on an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes an engine operational model, with the engine operational model capable of outputting at least one engine operational characteristic, a feedback controller portion, the feedback controller portion receiving an emissions level feedback and generating a feedback control signal based on a difference between a predetermined EGR level and the emissions level feedback, a feedforward controller portion receiving a plurality of engine sensor inputs and using the plurality of engine sensor inputs in conjunction with the engine operational model to generate a feedforward control signal, the feedforward control signal capable of changing an EGR exhaust gas flow before the plurality of engine sensor inputs show a deviation from a predetermined emissions level, and a controller receiving the feedback control signal, the feedforward control signal, and accessing the engine operational model, the controller regulating an EGR exhaust gas flow in response to the feedback control signal, the feedforward control signal, and the engine operational model.
