Compact fluorescent lamp

A method of manufacturing a low-pressure arc discharge lamp formed by interconnecting two or more parallel glass discharge tubes, each tube being sealed at one end. A hermetically sealed arc-containing channel between the two adjacent tubes is formed by heating opposing sections of the two tubes to soften a first and second site on each of the respective tubes. Then, one of the tubes is pressurized until a glass bubble forms from the softened site; the bubble is blown toward and onto the other tube about the softened site thereof. The pressure in the first tube is then released, and pressure is applied in the second tube to form a second glass bubble which fuses with the first glass bubble and bursts into the first tube thereby forming the sealed arc-containing channel between the two tubes. The technique may be applied to multiple tube assemblies by alternating the end of the tube at which the joint is formed. Once the tubes are joined, they may be processed by current manufacturing techniques to produce a low-pressure arc discharge lamp.

A process for operating a discharge lamp with an arc drop of not less than about 75% of a given service voltage includes the steps of series connecting a ballast and discharge lamp, coupling the series connected ballast and discharge lamp to a service voltage source and shunting the discharge lamp with a means for developing a pulse potential at or near the beginning of each half-cycle of the service voltage. Also, a series connected inductive ballast and discharge lamp are connected to a service voltage source and a non-linear dielectric element and preheat switching means each shunting the discharge lamp.

Discharge lamp operating apparatus and method

An electrodeless fluorescent light source including an electrodeless lamp containing a metal iodide or iodine. A fluorescing material is disposed between the electrodeless lamp and an outer envelope. When the contents of the electrodeless lamp are excited by high frequency power, excited iodine atoms emit ultraviolet radiation. The ultraviolet radiation impinges on the fluorescing material causing it to emit visible light. The fluorescing material may be a solid phosphor material on the outer surface of the electrodeless lamp, a solid phosphor material on the inner surface of the outer envelope, a gaseous phosphor material in the space between the electrodeless lamp and the outer envelope, or some combination thereof.

A source of visible light including an electrodeless lamp containing a mercury halide, iodine, and nitrogen. When the contents of the electrodeless lamp are excited by high frequency power, visible light is emitted.

Enhanced electrodeless light source

In a mercury-containing arc discharge device for converting electrical energy into resonance radiation, the isotopic distribution of the mercury in the device is altered from that of natural mercury so as to reduce imprisonment time of resonance radiation and thereby increase the efficiency of conversion of electrical energy into resonance radiation.
