Speech detection can be achieved by identifying a speech segment within an audio segment using image classification. An audio segment of radio communications is obtained. An audio sub-segment within the audio segment is extracted. A sampled histogram is generated of a plurality of sampled values across a sampled time window of the audio sub-segment. A two-dimensional image is generated that represents a two-dimensional mapping of the sampled histogram along a first dimension and a predefined histogram along a second dimension that is orthogonal to the first dimension. The two-dimensional image is provided to an image classifier previously trained using the predefined histogram. An output is received from the image classifier based on the two-dimensional image. The output indicates whether the audio sub-segment contains speech.

Illustrative embodiments provide a method and system for communicating air traffic control information. An audio signal comprising voice activity is received. Air traffic control information in the voice activity is identified using an artificial intelligence algorithm. A text transcript of the air traffic control information is generated and displayed on a confirmation display. Voice activity in the audio signal may be detected by identifying portions of the audio signal that comprise speech based on a comparison between the power spectrum of the audio signal and the power spectrum of noise and forming speech segments comprising the portions of the audio signal that comprise speech.

Described herein is an example method for aligning an aircraft with a centerline of a runway during takeoff. The method includes accessing a first image captured by a first camera mounted on a first side of the aircraft; accessing a second image captured by a second camera mounted on a second side of the aircraft that is opposite the first side; determining a first angle between a first marked line on the runway in the first image and a first reference line in the first image; determining a second angle between a second marked line on the runway in the second image and a second reference line in the second image; and based on the first angle and the second angle, moving a control surface of the aircraft such that the aircraft moves closer to the centerline of the runway.

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media storing instructions for determining cross-track error of an aircraft on a taxiway are disclosed herein. The disclosed techniques capture electronic images of a portion of the taxiway using cameras or other electronic imaging devices mounted on the aircraft, pre-process the electronic images to generate regularized image data, apply a trained multichannel neural network model to the regularized image data to generate a preliminary estimate of cross-track error relative to the centerline of the taxiway, and post-process the preliminary estimate to generate an estimate of cross-track error of the aircraft. Further embodiments adjust a GPS-based location estimate of the aircraft using the estimate of cross-track error or adjust the heading of the aircraft based upon the estimate of cross-track error.

An example system includes a first sensor and a second sensor coupled to an aircraft at a first location and a second location, respectively, and a computing system configured to receive sensor data from one or both of the first sensor and the second sensor to detect airport markings positioned proximate a runway. The computing system is further configured to identify a centerline of the runway based on the airport markings and receive sensor data from both of the first sensor and the second sensor to determine a lateral displacement that represents a distance between a reference point of the aircraft and the centerline of the runway. The computing system is further configured to control instructions that indicate adjustments for aligning the reference point of the aircraft with the centerline of the runway during subsequent navigation of the aircraft.
