Mobile broadband traffic has been exploding in wireless networks () resulting in an increase of interferences and reduced operator control. Networks () are also becoming more heterogeneous putting additional demand in interference management. There is currently no support for signalling of neighbor cell interference gleaned from soft and softer handover powers. Thus, there are no algorithms that accounts for and/or estimates interference impact factors between neighboring cells based on neighbor cell interference estimates gleaned from soft and softer handover power. To address these and other issues, techniques to accurately predict/estimate neighbor cell interferences that accurately accounts for own cell powers, soft handovers, softer handovers, neighbor cell interferences, and remaining neighbor cell interferences are presented. The described techniques estimate coupling effects of scheduling decisions in one cell to surrounding cells. In this way, interferences in the network () can be managed. To allow sharing of impact factors between network nodes (), signalling techniques are also presented.

Method, apparatus, and system for interference metric signalling

The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement in a first communication node for adjusting a channel quality report transmitted between the first communication node and a second communication node. The first communication node and the second communication node are comprised in a wireless communication network, and are adapted to communicate with each other via a radio link. In a first step, a channel quality report is received from the second communication node. The channel quality report is established by the second communication node. Then at least one channel characteristic parameter is obtained. The next step is to determine a channel quality offset based on the obtained channel characteristic parameter. Based on the channel quality offset, the channel quality report is adjusted.

Method and arrangement in a base station for providing an input parameter in an algorithm for predicting uplink load in a cell in a wireless communication system. The cell comprises at least one user equipment. The method comprises obtaining SIR target value associated with the user equipment, measuring SIR value on a signal sent from the user equipment, comparing the difference between the obtained SIR target value and the measured SIR value with a threshold limit value, selecting the SIR value as input parameter in the uplink load prediction algorithm for the user equipment, if the difference between the obtained SIR target value and the measured SIR value is bigger than the threshold limit value. In an improved and reliable method and arrangement allowing a user equipment to acknowledge the re-pointing over target cell in the HS-DSCH serving cell change procedure, wherein a Media Access Control (MAC) frame include information indicates the acknowledgement. In one embodiment the MAC frame contains only the Scheduling Information (SI) field with a coding not normally used, e.g. TEBS=O and HLID=0 (TEBS=Total E-DCH Buffer Status; HLID=Highest Priority Logical Channel ID). Since the MAC frame is protected by Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ), high reliability is ensured. Also, the MAC frame is transmitted to all cells in the active set, so that robustness is ensured also during imbalance situations.

Providing a serving HS-DSCH cell change acknowledgement

A scheduler for ranking-based scheduling of multiple users on a shared communication channel of a serving base station in a wireless communication system comprises a determiner (), a priority ranker (), a user selector () and a resource allocator (). The determiner () is configured to determine, for each user of a given traffic class, measured bandwidth share ratios with respect to each of a number of other traffic classes. The priority ranker () is configured to determine, for each user, a priority rank based on i) achievable bit rate of the user according to reported channel quality, and ii) a quality of service component representing compliance of the measured bandwidth share ratios to corresponding target bandwidth share ratios. The user selector () is configured to select a subset of the users among those users having the highest priority ranks, and the resource allocator () is configured to allocate transmission resources of the base station to the selected subset of the users for transmission of user data on the shared communication channel.

A method and device for channel allocation using channel allocation tiering (CHAT), where radio resources are de-coupled from hardware resources and the available hardware resource units in a cell are divided into logical groups, 'channel tiers'. Each tier simultaneously utilizes, partly or fully, the same radio resources. There is a first tier and at least a second tier. In accordance with the invention terminals are allocated to the first tier until a radio resource load threshold close to but less than 100% is reached. Terminals are allocated channels on said at least second tier based upon a terminal's interference suppression capabilities, or the radio requirements of the service being used on the terminal, or the radio location of the terminal, or a combination of the above.

A handover or cell change procedure in a cellular radio communications system starts with mobile user terminal present in a serving cell and having multiple radio resources simultaneously allocated for communication with a base station of the cell. When there is a need for a cell change, the multiple radio resources are sequentially replaced with radio resources allocated to the terminal for communication with at least one base station having an associated cell different from the serving cell. This cell change procedure provides macro diversity without requiring the complexity of soft handover and has enhanced service coverage and handover robustness compared to hard handover.

A method and apparatus for determining the content in bursts to be transmitted from a base station in a mobile network on a broadcast frequency in specific timeslots of a broadcast frequency frame structure. A current state of the logical channel allocated to the forthcoming burst is checked, and the content in the forthcoming burst is determined depending on the current channel state. A dummy burst with a base station specific training sequence is transmitted if there is no data to transmit, and if the dummy burst cannot be confused with a regular traffic burst according to the current channel state. The dummy burst contains no intelligible information to mobile terminals.

Method and apparatus for determining the content of bursts to be transmitted from a base station

The invention involves selection of modulation scheme for a mobile unit () having access to a link quality enhancing algorithm () operable only on data modulated using a subset of the available modulation schemes. The mobile unit () performs signal quality measurements on a communications link (), over which data modulated with a first modulation scheme is communicated. A link quality measure is then determined for this first modulation. A quality enhancement due to operation of the algorithm () is also determined. This quality measure and the quality enhancement are used for generating decision information, which is reported to the network (). There the information is used for estimating link quality measure(s) of currently non-employed modulation(s) for the mobile unit (). The selection of a modulation scheme for the communications link is then performed based on the decision information and the estimated quality measure(s).

A frequency hopping sequence generator system () for use in a radio telecommunications system utilizes variable frequency offsets (FO) to determine a frequency hopping sequence for use in communication between a mobile station and a network node. The frequency hopping sequence generator comprises a frequency offset hopping generator () which chooses the variable frequency offsets so that the frequency hopping sequence provides intra-cell interference diversity. For each mobile station, the frequency offset hopping generator determines a frequency offset index (FOI) which is mapped to one of plural possible frequency offsets (FO). The frequency offset index (and thus the corresponding frequency offset) is determined to provide the frequency hopping sequence with both interference diversity and orthogonality. The frequency offset index has an inter-cell component (that provides, e.g., collision diversity between FO hopping sequences that are not orthogonal) and an intra-cell component (that provides orthogonal (non-colliding) sequences with a variable difference between two sequences).

In a radio communication system that includes multiple service areas, each service area is associated with a predetermined number or amount of radio communication resources. Each radio communication resource can be used for a prescribed period of time corresponding to one or more time units. An operator or other entity identifies a set of service areas to be tested at an increased effective load. A desired test level (e.g., increased traffic load) is determined, and a corresponding number of radio resource time units is determined to achieve the desired test level conditions. Use of radio communication resources in the determined one or more time units is blocked for a test period. Performance by each service area during the test period is determined.
