A multi-user aware ('MUA') computing device, such a communal computing device like an interactive digital whiteboard, can enforce role-based constraints on the modification of components, such as configuration settings. The MUA computing device can be configured with universal settings, global settings, and temporal settings. Universal settings cannot be changed by users of the MUA computing device. Device owners can change global settings that apply to all users of a MUA computing device. All users of the MUA computing device can change temporal settings. Changes to temporal settings are stored in profiles associated with authenticated users but are not persisted for guest users. When all users have stopped using the MUA computing device, the device can be configured with default values for the temporal settings in order to return the device to a known state.

Enforcement of role-based constraints on the modification of components of a multi-user aware computing device

A result shaping methodology is part of a bridge (translation layer) between an entity provider and an underlying store provider. The bridge accepts command trees and parameter values from a consumer (e.g., the entity provider), reshapes the trees as necessary for its underlying store provider to execute, executes resulting commands, and assembles the results from the commands into the nested data reader that the initial command tree requested. The result assembly advantageously takes a mapping declaration and compiles it into a set of expression definitions composed from a small number of simple functions. Each collection in the result has a corresponding expression describing how collection elements are realized given relational results. Other expressions describe boundary detection behavior. These expressions are compiled into functions used to shape relational data into arbitrary object graphs or streaming interfaces. Alternative versions of the expressions for performance or graceful contextual error handling are also compiled.

Efficient functional representation of result shaping

Systems and methods that translate queries defined by an entity model, to a dialect recognizable by storage provider (e.g., relational store). A bridge component facilitates translation of a rich object structure into flat relational constructs, which can then be executed by a relational store. Accordingly, queries defined by applications in terms of entity concepts can readily be employed in conjunction with relational data stores. Similarly, results obtained from executing the query can be converted back to a form understandable by the application.

Extensible command execution for entity data model platform

A query language has support for rich data types. A query language system contains an application configured to generate queries according to the query language. In addition, the system has a platform for handling queries that are generated using the provided query language. The platform contains an object services layer, a map provider layer, and a bridge layer which may ultimately interface with a variety of commercially available databases.

Various mechanisms are presented that allow for the coordination of transactions in a managed runtime environment. In one aspect, a runtime environment that is hosted in a database system, includes an application programming interface (API). The API can surface the database transactions as ambient transactions, and present them to some user code. When the user code connects to some remote resource, the ambient transaction can be implicitly propagated to the remoter resource, resulting in coordination of the database transaction with any given transaction running in the remote resource.

Framework for database transactions

Systems and methods for improved exposure of database schema information are disclosed. Generally, a database driver may retrieve and provide database schema information according to one of two default methods or, also, a third override method. The first default method is to execute a query on the database. The second default method is to retrieve information from a hard-coded collection stored locally at the driver. The third override method is to retrieve information from a designated file that may be updated at any time without having to update the database and/or driver binaries.
