Polylactide or polyglycolide graft copolymers, prepared with grafts comprising up to 40% by total polymer weight, but not 0%, of glycolide or the D- or L-isomer of lactide in an enantiomeric excess of 84% on a saturated polymer backbone, are suitable for use as the thermoplastic elastomeric component of hot melt adhesives.

Hot melt adhesive masses are provided with a tackless surface by a process which comprises the steps of: a) extruding the hot melt adhesive through an appropriate die orifice; b) spraying the surface of the extruded adhesive with a molten film forming low molecular weight polymer or formulated polymeric material, the material being selected so that it will not appreciably detract from the properties of the adhesive composition when remelted therewith; c) heating the surface of the coated adhesive at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to re-melt the film forming polymer so as to form a continuous coating thereof yet insufficient to appreciably melt the adhesive; and d) cooling the thus coated adhesive mass to a temperature suitable for handling.

Process for coating hot melt adhesives

In a process for manufacturing degradable cigarette filters wherein adhesive is applied to at least one longitudinal edge of the plug wrap paper, a bond is made while the adhesive is molten and the resultant bond is held in compression for sufficient time to prevent bond movement, the improvement which comprises, using as the adhesive, from about 20 to 60% by weight of an intermediate or high DS starch ester having from about 2 to 18 carbon atoms in the ester component and a DS (degree of substitution) of from about 0.3 to 2.5, 5 to 40% by weight of a polar wax, 5 to 50% by weight of a plasticizing diluent, 0 to 25% by weight of a compatible tackifier and 0 to 3% by weight of an antioxidant.

Starch based hot melt adhesives for cigarettes

In a process for manufacturing degradable cigarette filters wherein adhesive is applied to at least one longitudinal edge of the plug wrap paper, a bond is made while the adhesive is molten and the resultant bond is held in compression for sufficient time to prevent bond movement, the improvement which comprises, using as the adhesive, a water sensitive hot melt adhesive comprising 50 to 90 weight percent of a graft copolymer which copolymer comprises 40 to 85 weight percent of at least one vinyl monomer and 15 to 60 weight percent of at least one polyalkylene oxide polymer, 0 to 50 weight percent of a compatible tackifying resin, 5 to 40 weight percent of a polar wax, 0 to 3 weight percent antioxidant and 0 to 30 weight percent of another compatible water soluble or water sensitive thermoplastic polymer; characterized in that the resulting cigarette filter will open when exposed to moisture.

Method of making biodegradable cigarette filters using water sensitive

A non-blocking hot melt adhesive mass is prepared by (a) lining a rigid mold with a plastic film, said film being meltable together with the adhesive composition and blendable into said molten adhesive composition, and said mold being a heat sink or being in contact with a heat sink; (b) pouring molten hot melt adhesive into the lined mold; and (c) allowing the molten hot melt adhesive to solidify.

Method for packaging hot melt adhesives

A non-blocking hot melt adhesive mass is packaged by directly pouring or pumping the molten adhesive into a cylindrical plastic tube, the cylindrical tube being in contact with a heat sink. The resultant adhesive package is provided in a readily handable cartridge form which may be produced in a continuous line operation.

Method for tackless packaging of hot melt adhesives

Hot melt adhesive compositions comprising selected modified starch esters as the main or base adhesive material wherein the starch ester has an ester component of about 2 to 18 carbon atoms and a DS of from about 0.3 to 3.0 and a sufficient amount of a non-volatile, polar organic diluent to allow the composition to melt and have a viscosity of less than 50,000 cP at an application temperature of 400.degree. F. or less.
