A computer-based method and apparatus transfer files from a source media to a destination media. In one embodiment, the presence of a source media in a source storage drive is detected. In response to the detection, a user is prompted to transfer files from the source media. Then, in response to user input, files are transferred from the source media to the destination media. In another embodiment, a user is prompted for a transfer session identifier. Data is then transferred from a source media to a subdirectory on a destination media. The subdirectory corresponds to the transfer session identifier. The method and apparatus aid in migrating computer data from one storage technology to another (e.g., from media based on an older technology to media based on a newer technology).

Method for transferring and indexing data from old media to new media

A method and system for enabling a computer application that executes in an environment in which support for USB does not exist (e.g., in the DOS environment) to interact with a USB storage device. In a most preferred embodiment, a system and method is disclosed for restoring a computer system from a storage device on a USB utilizing a disaster recovery application that executes in DOS.

Method for restoring an operating system utilizing a storage device on a USB bus

A method of guaranteeing a minimum sustained data transfer rate to a chosen device connected to a USB bus. A set of filter drivers are inserted in the driver stacks for at least two USB devices. These filter drivers are controlled by a filter driver controller that provides and receives information from the filter drivers. When a particular device needs a minimum sustained bandwidth for a transaction, the filter driver for that device notifies the filter driver controller. The filter driver controller then instructs the filter drivers for at least one other device to start interfering with USB transactions. This interference prevents the interfered with devices from using any of the USB bus bandwidth thereby providing a minimum sustained bandwidth to the non-interfered with device.

Method for guaranteeing a device minimun bandwidth on a usb bus

An apparatus and method for communicating between a controller and a message processing device over a universal serial bus (USB). The apparatus may comprise an interface having a bulk data-out endpoint for receiving a data-out packet from the controller that requests data from the device. The interface also has an interrupt-in endpoint for receiving interrupt-in packets from the controller requesting a status of the requested data from the device. When the requested data becomes available, logic at the interface transmits the status from the interrupt-in endpoint to the controller. In addition, when USB bandwidth so permits, logic at the interface also transmits the data with the status from the interrupt-in endpoint to the controller. Alternatively, where the data is not transmitted with the status, upon receiving the status the controller queries the interface at a bulk data-in endpoint for the requested data. The device responds through logic at the interface by transmitting the data from the bulk data-in endpoint to the controller in response to the query. The interface may also comprise a bidirectional control endpoint for communicating control signals (e.g., device clear) between the device and the controller.

Apparatus and method for universal serial bus communications

The present invention relates to the attachment of latency-intolerant devices, such as CD-RW devices to a well supported high bandwidth interface on a host computer. A preferred high bandwidth interface is the Universal Serial Bus (USB) which is commonly installed in personal computers manufactured in the late 1990's. A need for both high pre-allocated bandwidth makes use of the Isochronous transfer mode desirable for communication with CD-RW and other devices requiring continuous data transmission. One of a range of data reliability mechanisms is preferably implemented on the connection to the USB to ensure accuracy in data transmission to the various devices connected to the USB.
