Multiphase flow metering is provided. In one possible implementation, a multiphase flow measurement system includes at least one reference temperature sensor at a first position configured to measure a first temperature of a multiphase flow. The multiphase flow measurement system also includes at least one heated temperature sensor at a second position downstream of the reference temperature sensor configured to excite the multiphase flow and measure a second temperature of the multiphase flow.

A technique facilitates active zonal control over the inflow of fluids into a lateral wellbore completion at individual well zones of a plurality of well zones. The completion may comprise a plurality of sand screens through which inflowing fluids pass before entering an interior of the completion, e.g. before entering an interior of a completion base pipe. A control module is positioned along the completion between well zones. The control module is controlled via electrical control signals and is operatively connected with a plurality of intelligent flow control devices which are located along the completion in corresponding well zones. Based on signals received, the control module individually controls the intelligent flow control devices to allow or block flow into an interior of the completion at each well zone.

An emulsion is mixed with fibers while the emulsion is moving through a surface tubing using a venturi. The fiber/emulsion mixture is injected into a pressurized tank and the pressurized fiber/emulsion mixture is injected from the pressurized tank into a desired location in a wellbore. Pumps and pressure boosters may be used to move the fluid.

Mixing and injecting fiber-based stimulation fluids

In one possible implementation, fresh hydrochloric acid or (partially) spent hydrochloric acid can be pressurized by a pressure source. The pressurized acid from the acid source is injected into a wellbore during an acidizing operation. In addition, a carbon dioxide source may be provided. Acid from the acid source is combined with carbon dioxide from the carbon dioxide source, and the combined acid and carbon dioxide, pressurized by the pressure source, are injected into the wellbore during the acidizing operation. A processor located at the earth's surface or downhole may be provided. The processor can monitor the relative proportions of carbon dioxide and acid in the acid/carbon dioxide combination, as well as the pressure of the acid/carbon dioxide combination at an injection site in the wellbore. Acidizing operation management decisions can be made based on the monitored relative proportions and/or the monitored pressure.

Optimizing matrix acidizing operations

A system is described for evaluating coagulation of particles in a downhole fluid-particle mixture based on dielectric measurements. An example downhole treatment is one in which flocs are used to plug a high-permeability subterranean formation zone as part of a stimulation procedure. An injection tube is positioned within the wellbore to the high-permeability zone. An instrumented section of tubing includes one or more dielectric probes that are positioned and configured to make dielectric measurements of the particle-fluid mixture flowing in the tubing or in the annulus. The downhole dielectric measurements are used to indicate whether or not the particle-fluid mixture has the desired structural properties. An operator on the surface can make adjustments in real-time according to the received dielectric measurements.

A carrier device is provided for temporary installation downhole in a well. The carrier device is a robust device that is divided by a pressure bulkhead into a first section having an inductive coupler, power electronics, and a telemetry unit, typically all formed using multi-chip-module type electronics, and a second section with at least one test device typically using printed circuit board technology that may include sensors or transducers coupled to a communications bus and/or a power line that extends to the first section via the pressure bulkhead. The carrier further includes a mechanism that permits the carrier to be pulled out of the wellbore, and may include a mechanical locating element, typically adjacent the inductive coupler that permits the carrier to be located in the wellbore so that the inductive coupler will be located adjacent an inductive coupler in, on, or behind a liner or casing of the wellbore.

Apparatus, methods and systems for downhole testing of electronic equipment

Wireless communication and electromagnetic telemetry between various surface or downhole devices may be provided using two or more dipole antennas. The dipole antennas may be formed, for example, by electrically isolating, for each electric dipole antenna, two electrically conductive portions. The two electrically conductive portions are part of a downhole casing, a downhole liner, a completion, a production tube, or a downhole tool. The two or more electric dipole antennas are disposed in different sections of a completed well, in one or more lateral wells, in different completed wells, or in any combination of those. An electromagnetic signal is transmitting from at least one of the two or more dipole antennas and received at any other of the two or more dipole antennas, thereby providing telemetry or wireless communication between the dipole antennas of the petrophysical devices.

Systems and methods use enhanced flow control devices that can be selectively closed completely or have its effective flow area reduced to restrict production (or injection) by use of a chemical trigger mechanism. In addition, some of the systems deploy specific targeted chemical tracers, dissolvable in the unwanted production fluid (e.g., water or gas). These chemical tracers once dissolved will enter the production stream and be identified at the surface. An appropriate chemical trigger can be placed, for example, by pumping down through the tubing and utilizing intelligent completion valve to place the chemical, or by spotting with coiled tubing and bullhead to the formation. The chemical trigger will only trigger the active chemical in the appropriate flow control device.

Chemically targeted control of downhole flow control devices

Systems and methods for analyzing produced fluids in a mature water flood (or EOR scheme) and determining whether the introduction of an EOR agent, such as a chemical or a gas additive, or some other alteration in treatment, is enhancing the recovery of hydrocarbon from parts of the reservoir otherwise untouched by injected fluids. The monitoring can be used to identify subtle changes in the produced fluid caused by their flow through different pore structures. In a carbonate formation for example, ions and salts from the rock fabric are dissolved into the reservoir fluids, whether they are water or oil. These can be detected by various fluid analysis and particularly water analysis methods. The changes in reservoir fluid paths associated with the injection of an EOR agent are detected in the observation well.

A packer deployed well wall monitoring or transceiver assembly. The assembly may be particularly suited for use with swellable packers wherein the sensor or transceiver is delivered in a manner that substantially avoids damage thereto. Furthermore, the pre-deployment configuration of the assembly may enhance the deployment and reliability of the sensor in terms of formation monitoring over time. The deployment of the packer provides the energy required for the sensor or transceiver to contact the well wall. The packer elastomeric material provides or can be enhanced to provide isolation of the sensor or transceivers from extraneous borehole disturbances improving their signal to noise characteristics.

A technique facilitates detection of water incursion in a hydrocarbon well. Well equipment is positioned in a wellbore with one or more downhole components or regions comprising a tracer material. The tracer material is released in the presence of water to indicate incursion of water at a specific location along the wellbore. A sensor system is employed to detect the released tracer material.

A technique facilitates a water flood, e.g. dump flood, operation. A standard electric submersible pumping system is deployed in a wellbore to draw water from an aquifer or water source zone along the wellbore. A shroud and a crossover port are used in combination with the submersible pumping system to redirect pumped water downwardly along an isolated flow path. The downward flow of pumped water is directed along the wellbore and injected into a desired, injection zone to facilitate recovery of oil or to perform other types of water flood operations.
