An anvil roll is configured to operatively engage with a tooling agent. The anvil includes an outer surface, an opposing surface opposite the outer surface and an inner surface. One or more spring elements are disposed between the opposing surface and the inner surface. The springs provide a compliance to the anvil.

Compliant anvil

A system and an apparatus capable of independently driving movers are described herein. The system and apparatus includes: a track that forms a path for movers; a plurality of movers movably mounted on the track for moving along the path; and a plurality of drive elements fixedly arranged along the track. The drive elements each have a surface that is oriented to contact a driven member of the movers. The drive elements are configured to sequentially engage the driven member of a plurality of the movers to provide controlled independent motion of the movers along the track. The drive elements may be driven by rotary motors. A method of independently driving movers is also described herein.

An anvil is configured to operatively engage with a tooling agent. The anvil includes an outer surface, an opposing surface opposite the outer surface and an inner surface. One or more spring elements are disposed between the opposing surface and the inner surface. The springs provide a compliance to the anvil.

Apparatus that controls motion of independent movers along a path

A flexible curvilinear knife is disclosed. The flexible curvilinear knife is formed from a cutting element, a blade holder element, and a plurality of spring elements. A first, proximal end of each spring element of the plurality of spring elements is operably and fixably attached to a discrete location of the cutting element and a second, distal end of each spring element of the plurality of spring elements is fixably attached to a discrete location of the blade holder element.

Flexible curvilinear knife

A flexible bonding roll including one or more pressure applying members is configured to operatively engage an anvil roll. The one or more pressure applying members include one or more spring elements. The spring elements allow for the one or more pressure applying members to compress as the pressure applying members are engaged by the outer circumferential surface of the anvil roll. The compression of the pressure applying members allows for relatively reduced damage of substrates and equipment during bonding.

A knife including a cutting edge, a fixed edge, and a plurality of beam elements connecting the cutting edge to the fixed edge, each of the beam elements having a beam element extent oriented between about 20 degrees and about 80 degrees off of the cutting edge, each beam element separated from adjacent beam elements by a reduced stiffness zone, each reduced stiffness zone having a reduced stiffness zone extent oriented from about 20 degrees to about 80 degrees off of the cutting edge. The knife can be employed in a process and an apparatus for cutting a web.

The method relates to functional absorbent materials that are profiled through cutting and heating to form flow channels, and in one embodiment to form bellows which rise above the flow channels. Additionally, the flow channels which are partially cut into an absorbent material may also function as hinge means for that material as regards bending and conformity of fit. In one embodiment, functional absorbent material is provided with discrete heating and cutting, e.g., by a laser, by which channels and bellows are simultaneously formed. In another embodiment using a discrete heating and cutting means, e.g., a laser, is used to provide channels partially through the surface of a functional absorbent material.
