A method and system that enable system firmware to efficiently boot an operating system (OS) and/or client program from a network-connected Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) device. The method generally comprises: (1) defining the firmware representation of the iSCSI device within the hierarchical data structure that represents the system hardware; and (2) extending the network support package to accommodate additional boot arguments that allow system firmware to acquire the information required for booting from the network-connected iSCSI device, while utilizing one of the existing discovery protocols.

Method to enable firmware to boot a system from an ISCSI device

A mechanism is added to a network support package to enable/allow the specification of additional boot discovery protocols and additional network address formats. The mechanism defines qualifier keywords that are added to the boot arguments and processed by the network support package. The qualifier keywords modify the boot arguments associated with a bootstrap method by specifying a way to acquire the arguments (i.e., a specific boot discovery protocol), the format of the arguments, and other parameters associated with the arguments. Multiple qualifier keywords may be added to the boot arguments at a time, and the keywords can be applied in their order within the arguments.

Method to add IPV6 and DHCP support to the network support package

Firmware of an InfiniBand (IB) host computer device provides a representation of an IB Host Channel Adapter (HCA) within the hierarchical data structure during system initialization. An ib-boot support package encapsulates arguments for booting over an IB network using an ibport device. The ib-boot support package supports use of one or more command keywords, each identifying a specific type of support package utilized to retrieve the boot image. When the srp keyword is provided, an SRP protocol is used to access the storage boot device and retrieve the boot file. Access to the boot server is thus provided via one of the support packages, and the boot image is returned to the host device via the IB network for completion of boot operations.

Method to enable infiniband network bootstrap

Firmware of an InfiniBand (IB) host computer device provides a representation of an IB Host Channel Adapter (HCA) within the hierarchical data structure during system initialization. An ib-boot support package encapsulates arguments for booting over an IB network using an ibport device. The ib-boot support package supports keywords identifying a network support package or a Sockets Direct Protocol (SDP) support package. When the first keyword is provided, the IPoIB network protocol is used to access the boot server and retrieve the boot file. When the second keyword is provided, the IB network boot method is implemented, whereby the SDP network protocol is used to access the boot device. Access to the boot server is thus provided via one of the support packages, and the boot image is returned to the host device via the IB network for completion of boot operations.

A method, apparatus and computer instructions for handling exception vectors by firmware. An exception vector is identified to form an identified exception vector when control is passed from an operating system to the firmware. The identified exception vector is saved to form a saved exception vector. The identified exception vector is then replaced with a substitute vector; and the saved exception vector is restored when control is returned to the operating system to form a restored exception vector. At that point, the restored exception vector is again used to perform error and debugging processes.

Method and apparatus for transparently sharing an exception vector between firmware and an operating system

A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for generating a hardware interrupt to the operating system in response to detecting a presence of the event in the platform. The event is stored in a partition queue associated with a partition firmware in response to the presence of the event. The event is identified in the partition queue, in response to receiving a request to check the hardware interrupt in the partition firmware. The event is processed in response to identifying the event.

Method and apparatus for responding to critical abstracted platform events in a data processing system

A method, system, and apparatus for managing a failed input/output adapter within a data processing system is provided. In one embodiment, an operating system handler receives an indication that one of a plurality of input/output adapters has failed. The operating system handler consults an error log to determine which input/output adapter has failed. Once the bad input/output adapter has been determined, the operating system handler disables the bad input/output adapter and deallocates any processes bound for the bad input/output adapter without powering down the data processing system. A user is then notified of the bad input/output adapter so that the bad input/output adapter can be replaced. The input/output adapter may be replaced without powering down the data processing system. Once the bad input/output adapter has been replace, the new input/output adapter is enabled.

Method for recovering from a machine check interrupt during runtime

A method and system for functional kernel verification testing within a data processing system is described. The method and system of the present invention performs imbedded functional verification test suites on selected kernel components within the data processing system when system administrator kernel component power-on self tests are required during an operating system boot operation. When an error is detected during the imbedded functional verification testing for a selected kernel component, it is reported based on the severity level. For a low or minor functional error, a warning is sent to the user and for a high or major functional error, the data processing system is immediately halted and a service call is generated. Additionally, to correct for the functional error, the data processing system may be enabled to de-install the most recent update of the kernel component. The data processing system may also be enabled to search for, download and apply auto-install fixes for a kernel component that a functional error has been detected. Also, the data processing system may be enabled to place an automated service call for flagging the functional error for the kernel component. After every fix, the data processing system is rebooted and the procedure begins again.

Method and system for functional kernel verification testing within a data processing system

Accordingly, provided is an apparatus and method for generating a computer system interrupt emulation having the effect of a hardwired interrupt. A service processor with a test circuit interface can be coupled to an integrated circuit, which has a test circuit with an access to a register of the integrated circuit. A program, executable by the processor, responds to an interrupt request by instructing the processor to save a system state of the integrated circuit and to set a system state of the integrated circuit. The method for emulating an interrupt of an integrated circuit provides for receiving an interrupt request. A register of an integrated circuit is then accessed through a test circuit of the integrated circuit. The contents of the register are saved to a storage location, and the register is then set to a state responsive to the interrupt request. The interrupt request may be made locally or remotely.

Apparatus and method for computer system interrupt emulation

An integrated circuit chip package is described wherein the chip has an active face including a plurality of input and output pads. The chip is mounted face down on a pluralilty of flexible inner beam leads. The package's outer beam leads are bonded to pads residing on an underlying circuit board. A convective heat sink is thermally mounted to the reverse face of the chip, which heat sink is formed from folded thin metal sheet. The heat sink exhibits both minimum mass, and optimum cooling efficiency. The minimum mass reduces the cost of the heat sink through material savings and minimizes the possibility of damage to the package caused by sudden acceleration. The heat sink, in addition to itself being somewhat flexible, is provided with mounting points which are physically connected to the underlying circuit board via resilient connecting means.
