A method is provided for controlling organic contaminants, such as xylans, pitch or both, that interfere with bleaching of fibers and/or cause other interference(s) in papermaking systems. The method includes contacting fibers before any bleaching thereof with a composition which contains a hemicellulolytic enzyme and an organic contaminant removal adjuvant to liberate the organic contaminants from the fibers. The treated fibers can then be bleached and further used, for example, in making paper. The present invention also relates to the treatment compositions and to paper products made with fiber materials treated with these compositions. A method of enhancing enzymatic degradation of a substrate as well as formulations and systems for achieving the same are also provided. Various substrates can be degraded or otherwise processed, including biomass, paper mill sludge, and animal hides. Enzymatic degradation can be enhanced by including one or more polymeric surfactants.

The present invention also relates to a method for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system. This method adds an effective amount of at least one polyglycol fatty acid ester to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the fouling organisms. The present invention also relates to a composition containing polyglycol fatty acid esters and useable in the above methods. The sulfamic acid used in the method of the invention has the formula R.sup.1 R.sup.2 NS(O).sub.2 (OH). In this formula, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently a hydrogen, a C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 alkyl group or a cyclohexyl group. However, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are not both hydrogen. Alternatively, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, together with the N, may also form a 5-8 membered heterocyclic ring having the formula: ##STR1## In the heterocyclic ring, X is O, NH, or CH.sub.2. The salt of sulfamic acid can be an acid salt or quaternized sulfamic acid salt. The present invention also relates to a composition containing sulfamic acids or salts thereof useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one sulfamic acid or salt thereof in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.

The present invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an effective amount of at least one N-alkyl heterocyclic compound to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface. The present invention also relates to a method for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system. This method adds an effective amount of at least one N-alkyl heterocyclic compound to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the fouling organisms. The N-alkyl heterocyclic compound used in the method of the invention has the following formula: ##STR1## The substituent R.sup.1 is a C.sub.8 -C.sub.20 alkyl group. The heterocyclic ring is a 5-8 membered heterocyclic ring where X is O, NH, or CH.sub.2. R.sup.2 is methyl, hydroxymethyl, or hydroxyethyl. The integer n ranges from 0 to 3. The present invention also relates to a composition containing N-alkyl heterocyclic compounds and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one N-alkyl heterocyclic compound in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.

The invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an effective amount of at least one amino methyl phosphonic acid or salt thereof to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface. The invention also relates to a method for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system. This method adds an effective amount of at least one amino methyl phosphonic acid or salt thereof to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the fouling organisms. The amino methyl phosphonic acid used in the methods of the invention has the formula R.sup.1 R.sup.2 NCH.sub.2 P(O)(OH).sub.2. In this formula, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently a C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alkyl group or a CH.sub.2 P(O)(OH).sub.2 group. However, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are not both a CH.sub.2 P(O)(OH).sub.2 group. Alternatively, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, together with the N, may also form a 5-8 membered heterocyclic ring having the formula: ##STR1## In the heterocyclic ring, X is O, NH, or CH.sub.2. The salt of an amino methyl phosphonic acid can be an acid salt or a quaternized amino methyl phosphonic acid salt. The invention also relates to a composition containing amino methyl phosphonic acids or salts thereof and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one amino methyl phosphonic acid or salt thereof in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.

The present invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an effective amount of at least one fluorosurfactant to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface. This method adds an effective amount of at least one fluorosurfactant to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. The fluorosurfactant used in the method of the invention is an anionic or nonionic fluorosurfactant selected from: R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 SCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CO.sub.2 Li, (R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)P(O) (ONH.sub.4).sub.2, (R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.2 P(O) (ONH.sub.4), (R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)P(O) (OH).sub.2, (R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.2 P(O) (OH), R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.x H, R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.y H, R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 SO.sub.3 H, or mixtures thereof. The group R.sub.f is F(CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2).sub.3-8, x varies from 2-20, and y varies from 2-20. The present invention also relates to a compositions containing a fluorosurfactant and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one fluorosurfactant in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.
