An embodiment of a method of communicating between a surface processing unit and an energy industry tool includes: receiving a power signal from a power source at an integrated interface device of a communication and processing system, the communication and processing system located between a surface processing unit and an energy industry tool, the interface device including a processor and a variable output power supply; receiving a communication at the processor from a surface processing unit; transmitting a control signal from the processor to the variable output power supply, the control signal including a series of pulses having a duty cycle that is varied to cause the power supply to generate a modulated direct current (DC) output signal having at least one of a frequency and an amplitude that is modulated according to a communication protocol to represent the communication; and transmitting the modulated output signal to a tool.

Systems and methods for communicating messages over a three-phase power cable between surface equipment and downhole equipment in a well. A transmitter parses messages into data bit pairs and generates a parity bit for each pair (a triplet). The bits of each triplet are concurrently but separately transmitted over the power cable. Each triplet is received from the power cable by a receiver and is decoded to identify the data bits. The receiver may verify the received bits and/or recover a lost bit in each triplet. The data bits are then reconstructed into the original message. Since each triplet has two bits, the effective data rate is twice the data rate of transmitting a single bit at a time. The parity bit enables recovery of data with a bit error rate of up to 1 in 3.

Systems and methods for double data rate communication via power cable

Systems and methods for enabling communication using two different alternative protocols on a single communication line between remote tools and control equipment used in well operations. In one embodiment, a system includes control equipment, remote tools and a communication line coupled between the control equipment and the remote tools. Each remote tool detects mode control signals on the communication line and operates alternately in either a first mode or a second mode in response to detecting corresponding mode control signals. The first mode enables two-way communication of data on the communication line according to a first communications protocol. The second mode enables one-way communication of data on the communication line from the remote equipment to the control equipment according to a second protocol. The second protocol is different from the first protocol, and may be incompatible with the first protocol.

Systems and methods for implementing different modes of communication on a communication line between surface and downhole equipment

The present disclosure relates to apparatuses and methods for terminating communication on a communication line between a carrier and at least one node located at a subsurface location. The apparatus may include a control member configured to initiate termination of communication in response to a controlled signal. The apparatus may also include a communication linkage configured to terminate the communication in a manner that cannot be remotely restored in response to the control member. The apparatus may also include a power source to maintain power to the communication linkage termination operation. The apparatus may be configured to use energy from the communication line to cause the communication linkage to terminate communication. The apparatus may be configured to use a communication linkage that is at least partially consumable. The method includes the use of the apparatus.
