An information handling system includes a host including a central processing unit, a first management controller (MC) enabled to communicate with the host, and a network interface resource (NIR) in communication with the host and operable to enable the information handling system to communicate via an external network. The NIR includes a unified management module (UMM) operable to receive and route a local management packet, sent from the host, to the first management controller via a first unified management bus (UMB) and further operable to receive and route a remote management packet, sent from a remote resource via the external network, to the first management controller via the first UMB.

Information handling system employing unified management bus

A system and method and method for filtering communications at a network interface controller is provided. The network interface controller is coupled to a baseboard management controller through a sideband communications channel. The network interface controller filters packets to the baseboard management controller on the basis of the address within the packet that identifies the device that caused the packet to be generated. The network interface controller transmits to the baseboard management controller only those packets that were generated in response to a command issued by the baseboard management controller.

In an information handling system, a universal serial bus (USB) key emulation system includes a USB hub operable to communicate with a USB host, a USB bus communicatively coupled with the USB hub, a USB controller communicatively coupled with the USB bus via a set of endpoints, and a USB virtual media module communicatively coupled with the USB controller and operable to communicate data between the USB controller and a plurality of data storage devices as if the plurality of data storage devices are a single USB key.

USB key emulation system to multiplex information

Firmware for a baseboard management controller (BMC) of a blade server module in an information handling system may have automatic firmware corruption recovery and updating through a TFTP transfer from a central storage location having the most recent BMC firmware image. Upon blade power-on or reset the BMC firmware image is checked for corruption and if corrupted a new BMC firmware image is loaded into the BMC memory. If the BMC firmware image is not corrupted then it is checked to determine if it is the latest version. If it is the latest version the BMC starts normal program execution. If not the latest version then the BMC firmware is updated through the TFTP transfer from the central storage location having the most recent BMC firmware image.

Automatic firmware corruption recovery and update

A baseboard management controller (BMC) of a blade server module in an information handling system may operate as a virtual system BIOS firmware hub that may have automatic firmware updating through a TFTP transfer from a chassis management controller (CMC) or for rack/tower servers from a remote assistant card (RMC). The system BIOS may be stored in a RAM drive or a ROM of the BMC. Valuable printed circuit board real estate and hardware for a firmware hub is no longer necessary since the BMC may have the capacity to act as a virtual system BIOS firmware hub in addition to its other functions.

Virtual BIOS firmware hub

An information handling system includes modular processing resources, each having a main processor, system memory, and preferably a service processor resource. A management resource coupled to a service processor resource evaluates a system power budget and allocates power to a processing resource by indicating a critical power level. The processing resource determines a warning power level based on the critical power level and monitor its actual power consumption. If actual power consumption exceeds the critical power level, the processing resource is powered down. If actual power consumption exceeds the warning power level, the processing resource throttles its performance to conserve power and requests a power allocation increase. If actual power consumption is below the warning power level, the processing resource may request a reduction in allocated power.

Power allocation management in an information handling system

An information handling system receives management information from a network, such as IPMI information, with plural network interface cards of the information handling system in a teaming configuration. Upon detecting management information, a network interface card issues an SMBus alert to a management processor of the information handling system. A team module running on the management processor reads the status of the network interfaces to identify the network interface associated with the alert and reads the management information from the network interface. Management information sent to the network is sent through a predetermined one of the network interfaces to ensure that, if teaming gets deactivated at the switch, there will not be multiple NICs with the same BMC MAC address transmitting to the switch.
