A method and system for automatically calculating and generating performance analysis charts, including a reliability curve. The method and system are used to selectively convert performance records data from a database into graphs and charts reflective of a performance analysis. A tool and method is provided for predicting the effective life or run time of a component, such as a drill bit, based on calculated reliabilities for similar components.

The invention also provides a tool and method that can be used to predict the effective life or run time of a component, such as a drill bit, based calculated reliabilities for similar components.

A cutter element for a drill bit has a crest that defines a crest line. The crest can be non-rectilinear. The crest line of each cutter element defines an angle with respect to the axis of the rolling cone on which the cutter element is mounted. The cutter elements define different angles with respect to the cone axis and with respect to each other.

The cutter element has a base portion and an extending portion and the extending portion has either a zero draft or a negative draft with respect to the base portion. The non-positive draft allows more of the borehole bottom to be scraped using fewer cutter elements. The cutter elements having non-positive draft can be either tungsten carbide inserts or steel teeth.

A cutter element for a drill bit. The cutter element has a non-rectilinear crest. The non-rectilinear or curvilinear crest provides an advantageous distribution of the cutting forces across the body of the cutter elements and thus improves bit life. The curvilinear crest also allows the cutter element to more efficiently lift the portion of the formation that is being cut, thereby improving cutting action in certain formations. The cutter elements can have either positive or non-positive draft and can be tungsten carbide inserts.

This invention relates to rotary rock drilling apparatus, particularly roller cone rock bits used with dry drilling of rock formations. Mining bits are typically air-driven, air-lubricated roller cone rock bits having open bearings, the air being driven through the bearing system between the roller cones and their associated journals. A lubrication system is disclosed which drips a lubricant in liquid form into the air passages communicating with each of the bearings associated with, for example, the three roller cones of the rock bit. Oil is entrained, along with the compressed air, and is directed to the bearings for cooling and lubrication purposes.
