A cooling system including a primary cooling module supplying refrigerant to a circuit including a thermal load. A secondary cooling module provides a supplemental flow of refrigerant to the circuit upon detection of a deficiency of the primary cooling module. A valve is disposed between the primary: module and the circuit to prevent refrigerant flow between the primary cooling module in the circuit. The secondary cooling module transactions from a standby mode of operation to an online mode of operation and the primary cooling module is deactivated in response to detection of the deficiency of the primary cooling module.

Cooling system for high density heat loads

A cooling system has both pumped refrigerant economization and direct expansion cooling. When outside air temperature is low enough that pumped refrigerant economization can provide enough cooling to satisfy cooling demand, only pumped refrigerant economization cooling is used to provide cooling. When outside air temperature is low enough that pumped refrigerant economization can provide some but not all of the cooling needed to satisfy cooling demand, the pumped refrigerant economization is operated at one hundred percent capacity and the direct expansion cooling is operated at a capacity to provide any supplemental cooling that is needed. If the outside air temperature is high enough that pumped refrigerant economization cannot provide any cooling, then only direct expansion cooling is used to provide cooling.

Cooling system with direct expansion and pumped refrigerant economization cooling

A pumped refrigerant cooling system having multiple pumping units for providing working fluid to a load to enable cooling of a space via the load. The pumped refrigerant cooling system operates the pumping units at less than capacity. When a pumping unit is deactivated, the output of the remaining pumping units is increased to maintain fluid flow.

A cooling system has a cabinet and a plurality of separate cooling stages including an upstream cooling stage and a downstream cooling stage. At least the upstream cooling state is a variable capacity cooling stage. Each cooling stage has a cooling circuit. Evaporators of the cooling circuits are arranged in the cabinet so that air passes over them in serial fashion. A controller when a Call for Cooling first reaches a point where cooling is needed, operating the upstream cooling circuit to provide cooling and not the downstream cooling circuit. When the Call for Cooling has increased to a second point, the controller additionally operates the downstream cooling circuit to provide cooling. The cooling capacity at which the upstream cooling circuit is being operated is less than its full capacity when the Call for Cooling reaches the second point.

High efficiency cooling system

A cooling system has a direct expansion mode and a pumped refrigerant economizer mode and a controller. The controller includes a load estimator that estimates real-time indoor load on the cooling system and uses the estimated real-time indoor load to determine whether to operate the cooling system in the pumped refrigerant economizer mode or in the direct expansion mode.

A cooling system for transferring heat from a heat load to an environment has a volatile working fluid. The cooling system includes first and second cooling cycles that are thermally connected to the first cooling cycle. The first cooling cycle is not a vapor compression cycle and includes a pump, an air-to-fluid heat exchanger, and a fluid-to-fluid heat exchanger. The second cooling cycle can include a chilled water system for transferring heat from the fluid-to-fluid heat exchanger to the environment. Alternatively, the second cooling cycle can include a vapor compression system for transferring heat from the fluid-to-fluid heat exchanger to the environment.

Cooling system for high density heat load

A cooling system includes a cooling circuit having an evaporator, a condenser, a compressor, an expansion device, a liquid pump, and a receiver/surge tank coupled between the condenser and the liquid pump. The cooling system has a direct expansion mode and a pumped refrigerant economizer mode. When the cooling system switches from the direct expansion mode to the pumped refrigerant economizer mode, refrigerant is flushed from the refrigerant/surge tank so that the cooling circuit is overcharged when it begins operating in the pumped refrigerant economizer mode.

A system for cooling heat-generating objects, such as computer boards situated in a rack, includes an enclosure in which the heat generating objects are situated. The enclosure has an air inlet and an air outlet, and a fan induces airflow into the air inlet, through the enclosure and out the air outlet. A heat exchanger is situated in the enclosure such that the heat exchanger is in a spaced apart relationship with the heat-generating object. Air moving through or past the heat-generating object is warmed, and the heat exchanger removes the heat before the air exits the enclosure.

Integrated heat exchangers in a rack for vertical board style computer systems

A redundant, dual circuit air conditioning apparatus is provided for communications enclosures which is wall mounted thereon. A conditioned air housing is provided having a blower chamber which contains two air circulation blowers thrusting air into the enclosure and having freely pivotal ducts which operate in mutual cooperation in response to pressure variations between the chamber and the enclosure. Internested evaporator coils of two discrete refrigeration circuits share common fin connections for efficiency and each includes a dual line input performing in conjunction with an expansion valve and a simple Y distribution fitting coupled to those lines which achieves requisite pressure drops at low cost. Compressor and condenser components are located within a condenser system housing in mutual isolation and perform in conjunction with discrete separate power inputs and controls such that servicing may take place safely upon one air conditioning entity while the other remains in operation to prevent down time during servicing.
