An improved aqueous cathodic electrocoating composition of an aqueous carrier having dispersed therein a film forming binder of (1) an epoxy resin-amine adduct and (2) a blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent; wherein the improvement is the use of a branched epoxy resin to form the adduct which is the reaction product of a polyhydric phenol and a branched epoxy macromonomer formed by the self condensation of an epoxy resin in the presence of a catalyst; the branched epoxy resin has an epoxy equivalent weight of about 700-2,000 and provides an electrocoating composition that has improved throw power and that forms coatings that have improved corrosion resistance in comparison to conventional electrocoating compositions formed from linear epoxy resins.

The pigment dispersant is the reaction product of an organic monoepoxide or polyepoxide with a primary amine containing an imidazoline moiety. Improved powder coating compositions are disclosed which comprise a particulate mixture of (1) a qualitatively difunctional copolymer of about 5 to about 20 weight percent of a glycidyl ester of a monoethylenically unsaturated acid, about 2 to about 10 weight percent of an alpha-beta olefinically unsaturated amide selected from acrylamide and methacrylamide and about 70 to about 93 weight percent monoethylenically unsaturated monomers consisting essentially of monofunctional monomers selected from the groups consisting of esters of a C.sub.1 - C.sub.8 monohydric alcohol and acrylic acid, esters of a C.sub.1 - C.sub.8 monohydric alcohol and methacrylic acid and C.sub.8 - C.sub.12 monovinyl hydrocarbons, and (2) a carboxy-functional crosslinking agent is a carboxy-terminated compound selected from the group consisting of esters of a diepoxide and a dicarboxylic acid and carboxy-terminated, saturated polyesters.

A method of preparing a homogeneous thermosetting powder paint composition which cures to form a coating exhibiting outstanding exterior durability, adhesion, impact strength and, in particular, color match. The method comprises: introducing a liquid paint composition including at least a cross-linkable copolymer and a uniformly dispersed pigment into an evaporating zone adapted to heat said liquid paint so as to evaporate the inert solvent contained therein, passing the liquid paint into a separating zone; causing said solvent vapor to be removed; removing the non-volatile components of said paint in a molten state; cooling said non-volatile components; granulating said non-volatile components to form particles; blending a cross-linking agent for said copolymer with said powder; mixing said blend at a temperature greater than the melting point of said powder and said cross-linking agent but below the point at which cross-linking occurs so to form a molten mass having cross-linking agent uniformly dispersed therein; cooling said molten mass to form a solid material; and pulverizing to form a powder paint.
