A method and system for transmitting, receiving, and collecting information related to a plurality of working components, such as street lamps, allows for efficient and effective monitoring and controlling of working components through short-distance radio communications at low power levels. In a preferred implementation of the present invention, a communications network includes a plurality of transceiver modules, each of which is secured and operably connected to a working component. These transceiver modules transmit and receive radio communications or 'messages' representative of the status of the working component from one another in a controlled manner, with each message ultimately being directed to an area control module. At the area control module, the messages are collected and transferred to a network support server, which analyzes the information and data contained in such messages, and then transfers such information and data to control and display units through a computer network for review by end users. The control and display units further allow for control of the working components by initiating transmission of radio communications containing instructions or programming code to one or more particular transceiver modules.

Disclosed is a shutter system for selectively blocking the path of light of a high intensity discharge lamp. The shutter system comprises a high intensity discharge lamp, a high intensity discharge light housing into which the lamp is secured and a shutter and light absorption system secured to the light housing comprising a light absorbing shutter screen, a screen moving system for moving the screen in front of the lamp to block selectively the path of light and for withdrawing the screen from the path of light and a support system for the screen moving system, wherein said screen when retracted will not significantly interfere with the path of light of the system and when fully extended will substantially block the path of light of the high intensity discharge lamp.

A lamp dimmer circuit for a high intensity discharge lamp includes an auto transformer, a power factor correction capacitor, a reactor ballast, a solid state phase control current module, a dimming control, a high frequency power supply, a coupling transformer, a high frequency by pass capacitor and a lamp. The high frequency low current source formed by the high frequency by pass capacitor, coupling transformer and high frequency power supply act to maintain the lamp arc even with variations in line voltage.

The ultrasonic generator comprises a transducer which is adapted to vibrate in a fundamental frequency mode and the harmonics thereof in response to a square wave signal which is applied thereto. The transducer is of the piezoelectric type which has a capacitor loading effect. A square wave generator is provided for generating a square voltage wave and driving means comprising high speed switching transistors is responsive to the signal from the square wave generator for driving the transducer with a square wave. The transistors are switchable between conducting and non-conducting states and are connected to the square wave generator so that the transistors are switched in phase opposition to each other. A non-resonant inductor connects the pair of transistors with the transducer to limit current flow and to permit application of the square wave to the transducer. An alternate embodiment utilizes a balancing transformer to eliminate the normal high common mode switching current.
