A signal indicating the quality of the received digital data in an ADPCM cordless telephone system is monitored and a transition from good to poor quality is detected. In response to this detection, a first attenuation level is applied to the received signal, the level being selected to maintain the intelligibility of the signal to the user while lowering the volume thereof. The first attenuation level is then reduced such that reduced attenuation is maintained over a time interval selected to accommodate for the known error propagation time of the ADPCM signal. An optional clipping circuit may be employed to limit the excursion of the output audio signal.

A method for configuring a program-controlled integrated circuit which contains default configuration data and includes input/output lines connectable to at least one external source of configuration data, the method including: a) determining whether an external source of configuration data is connected to the input/output lines; b) in response to a determination that an external source of configuration data is connected to the input/output lines, configuring the integrated circuit in accordance with that configuration data from that source; and c) in response to a determination that an external source of configuration data is not connected to the input/output lines, configuring the integrated circuit in accordance with the default configuration data. An application specific integrated circuit containing circuit units which must be configured in accordance with configuration data, the circuit including: external connection lines for connecting the circuit to an external source of configuration data; a first non-volatile memory portion storing default configuration data; and a second non-volatile memory portion storing a control program which is operative for selecting configuration data from among configuration data stored in a connected external source connected to the external connection lines and the stored default configuration data.

A system for demodulating a FSK digital signal comprising: first and second frequency detectors connected to detect the frequency of the digital signal, the first frequency detector producing an output signal whenever the digital signal is detected to have a first frequency and the second frequency detector producing an output signal whenever the digital signal is detected to have a second frequency; first and second low pass filters each having an input connected to receive the output signal produced by a respective frequency detector and an output for providing a smoothed version of the signal at the respective filter input; and signal combining circuitry connected to the outputs of the first and second filters for providing a demodulated output signal representing the FSK digital signal.
