A marine propulsion system is provided with a pump, a filter, and a water injector for injecting a spray or mist of water into the charge air of an internal combustion engine. Water is drawn from a body of water in which a marine propulsion system is operated, in conjunction with a marine vessel, and the water is pumped through a filter before being injected into the charge air of the engine. The filter can be a reverse osmosis device. The engine can be a turbo-charged or normally aspirated engine. The water injection system is suitable for use in association with the 4-cycle or 2-cycle engines.

Water injection system for an internal combustion engine of a marine propulsion system

A vapor separator assembly for an internal combustion engine includes a bowl member and a cover member. A fuel pump is located in the internal cavity of the bowl member and has its inlet located in the lower portion of the bowl member cavity, for supplying fuel thereto. The fuel pump is secured in position within the bowl member by engagement of the cover member with the fuel pump. The cover member includes a mounting portion for mounting a water separating filter element to the vapor separator assembly. The cover member includes structure for routing fuel from the discharge of the water separating filter element to the interior of the bowl member internal cavity. A compact arrangement is thus provided for the vapor separator, the fuel pump and the water separating filter, eliminating a number of hose connections between such components as well as facilitating assembly to the engine.

Vapor separator for an internal combustion engine

An improved exhaust port throttling mechanism for a two-stroke engine. The engine includes a plurality of in-line cylinders each having an exhaust passage disposed to be closed during reciprocating movement of the piston. The exhaust passages communicate with a common exhaust chamber and a tubular valve member is mounted for rotation within the exhaust chamber. The valve member includes a plurality of apertures, each adapted to register with one of the exhaust passages. When used with a V-6 engine having two banks of in-line cylinders, a shaft is connected to each valve member and the corresponding ends of the shafts are interconnected by meshing gear segments. One of the gear segments is connected through a linkage to the throttle lever for the engine so that the valve members will be rotated by actuation of the throttle lever between a substantially closed position at low speeds, where the valve members substantially close off the exhaust passages, to an open position at high speeds where the apertures in the valve members are in full registry with the exhaust passages, so that the exhaust gas is discharged via the interior of the valve members without restriction.

Exhaust valve throttling mechanism for two-stroke engine

The idle exhaust pressure relief system in an outboard motor is utilized to simultaneously heat the engine crankcase or other parts of the fuel supply system to prevent the puddling of fuel typically occurring at lower engine temperatures. Because the idle exhaust pressure relief system is inherently operable to conduct hot exhaust gases out of the exhaust manifold only at idle or low speed operation, heat is supplied to the crankcase only at temperatures when fuel puddling typically occurs.

Exhaust heated crankcase for 2-cycle marine engine

An exhaust port throttling mechanism for a two-stroke engine. The engine includes a plurality of in-line cylinders each having exhaust port means disposed to be closed during reciprocating movement of the piston. The engine block is provided with a passage which intersects each exhaust port means, and a shaft is mounted for rotation within the passage and carries a plurality of butterfly-type valves that are disposed to open and close each exhaust port means. When used with a V-6 engine, having two banks of in-line cylinders, a shaft carrying the valves is employed for each bank and the corresponding ends of the shafts are interconnected by meshing gear segments. One of the gear segments is connected through a linkage to the throttle lever for the engine, so that the valves will be moved by actuation of the throttle lever between a substantially closed position at low speeds to an open position at high speeds. A biasing mechanism is incorporated with the gear segments to bias the valves to a closed position, and an adjusting mechanism can be incorporated to manually adjust the closed position of the valves.
