The present disclosure involves object recognition as a method of registration, using a stereoscopic camera on Augmented Reality (AR) glasses or an endoscope as the image capture technology. Exemplary objects include surgical tools, anatomical components or features, such as bone or cartilage, etc. By detecting just a portion of the object in the image data of the surgical scene, the present disclosure may register and track a portion of the patient's anatomy, such as the pelvis, the knee, etc. The present disclosure also optionally displays information on the AR glasses themselves, such as the entire pelvis, the femur, the tibia, etc. The present disclosure may include combinations of the foregoing features, and may eliminate the need for electromagnetic, inertial, or infrared stereoscopic tracking as the tracking technology.

Systems and methods for augmented reality based surgical navigation

Systems and methods facilitate the planning and performance of hip and other surgeries. A computer model of a hip may be generated and displayed. A template of a hip component that replaces a native portion of the hip may be superimposed on the model. Changes in leg length, offset, or anterior-posterior (AP) position as well as a virtual distance between a landmark on the model and a location on the template may be determined. During surgery, a physical distance corresponding to the virtual distance may be obtained. The template may be moved relative to the model to match the physical distance, and new change values in leg length, offset, or anterior-posterior (AP) position may be determined. The new change values may be evaluated, and the surgery may proceed, or the process may be repeated using templates corresponding to alternative components.

Systems and methods for determining leg length change during hip surgery

An instrument registers and tracks a portion of a patient's anatomy by an Augmented Reality (AR) device worn by a surgeon during a surgical procedure. The instrument may be attached to the patient's anatomy. The instrument may be a tripod with a platform. A target plate having front and back faces may be securely attached to the platform. A two-dimensional (2D) code detectable by the AR device may be presented on the front and back faces of the target plate. The 2D code may define a coordinate system having a known relationship to a coordinate system for the patient's anatomy, e.g., through a transformation matrix. The AR device may utilize the coordinate system for the detected 2D code and the transformation matrix to present holograms in predetermined positions relative to the patient's anatomy.

Systems and methods for registering and tracking anatomical structures

A system and method creates a patient-specific surgical plan for use during a surgical procedure. The plan may reference an instrument for registering a portion of a patient during the procedure. The plan may be based on a computer-generated model of a portion of the patient's anatomy. The plan may be provided to a surgeon who uses the registration instrument to register the portion of the patient's anatomy according to the plan. Spatial location data for a plurality of points on the instrument and/or on the patient's anatomy may be obtained, and a patient-based coordinate system may be established using the registration instrument, the captured spatial location data or combinations thereof. The coordinate system may be used to attach one or more prosthetic components to the patient at locations and/or orientations specified in the plan.

Surgical system using a registration device

An instrument for establishing orientation of a pelvic prosthesis comprises a hub, a first arm attached to and extending from the hub, and a second arm attached to and extending from the hub. The first and second arms define a nominal plane of the apparatus, and may extend from the hub at an angle relative to each other. Distances between the first and second legs and between the first and third legs are adjustable. The first, second, and third legs have tips, and the tips of the first, second, and third legs define a plane having a predefined geometric relationship to the nominal plane of the apparatus.

Method and apparatus for determining acetabular component positioning

A system and method to receive a request for a patient-specific surgical plan, create the requested plan, and provide it to a surgeon is disclosed. A Planning server may receive information regarding a patient, such as one or more files or objects, and an order from a surgeon for a surgical plan. A Plan Development client may include a surgical planning module that accesses the one or more files or objects, and creates a computer-generated, three-dimensional model of the patient anatomy. The planning module of the Plan Development client also may create an electronic surgical plan, and may transmit the plan to the Planning server. The ordering surgeon may be notified of the availability of the plan, and may access the plan stored at the Planning server through a surgeon client. The ordering surgeon may utilize the remotely generated surgical plan during the surgical procedure on the patient.

Surgical planning system and method

A medical imaging device takes one or more images of the local anatomy of a patient undergoing a surgical procedure. A surface model generator receives the one or more images and generates a 3-D surface model of the patient's anatomy. A fabrication device utilizes the 3-D surface model to fabricate a template custom designed to match the surface of the patient's anatomy. Attached to the template is a directional guide vane. The fabrication device is configured to create a template and directional guide vane such that, when the template is fitted to the patient's anatomy, the directional guide vane points along a predefined orientation relative to the patient's anatomy. A physician uses the directional guide vane as a visual guide or cue for installing an implantable prosthetic component during a surgical procedure.

Acetabular template component and method of using same during hip arthrosplasty

An apparatus registers a patient's pelvis during surgery by establishing a patient-specific, supine pelvic reference plane. The apparatus may include an elongated support arm having three legs, at least two of which may be moveable along the arm. The first leg may contact the patient's right anterior superior iliac spines (ASIS), the second leg may contact the left ASIS, and the third leg may contact an anterior aspect of the ischium of the patient's pelvis below the acetabulum of the hip being operated on. The distances between the first leg and the second and third legs may be determined preoperatively so that the legs dock to the desired points. The apparatus may further include a direction indicator configured to point in a desired orientation for inserting an acetabular cup component in the patient's acetabulum.

Method and apparatus for performing anterior hip surgery

An instrument for establishing orientation of a pelvic prosthesis comprises a tripod having an angularly adjustable guide rod on it. The tips of the legs define a plane, and the guide rod is set by the surgeon to a defined orientation with respect to this plane on the basis of preoperative studies. In use, two of the legs of the instrument are positioned by the surgeon at defined anatomical locations on the pelvis (e.g., a point in the region of the posterior/inferior acetabulum and a point on the anterior superior iliac spine). The third leg then lands on the pelvis at a point determined by the position of the first two points, as well as by the separations between the third leg and the other two legs. The position of the guide rod then defines with respect to the actual pelvis the direction for insertion of a prosthesis.
