A two-phased liquid-cooled electrical power apparatus includes a plurality of cooling circuits that recirculate and transition respective engineered fluids between liquid and vapor states around closed-loop fluid paths to cool a plurality of devices. A portion of each fluid path is either integrated with or in thermal contact with its device. The engineered fluids are evaporated within the respective portions of the fluid paths to hold the operating temperatures at or near the respective and different phase transition temperatures. The cooling circuits may be used to maintain different operating temperatures of hollow primary and secondary winding coils in a power transformer, of parallel connect hollow winding excitation coils and a common magnetic core in an electrical reactor, of power semiconductor devices mounted on heat sink(s) in which the fluid paths are embedded or power semiconductor devices in which the respective fluid paths pass through the devices.

A method of stabilizing a power supply includes, receiving, at a controller connected to an alternating current (AC) excitation source, a plurality of system inputs. The method further includes obtaining a harmonic spectrum of the load current on a hybrid asynchronous induction machine, determining based on the harmonic spectrum, a first low frequency spectrum of the load current with a greatest magnitude of oscillations. Additionally, the method includes controlling the AC excitation source to generate a first compensation signal and providing the first compensation signal to the hybrid asynchronous induction machine.

The rotor comprises a primary rotor winding for a polyphase AC excitation signal and a secondary rotor winding for bidirectional power flow. A system includes a main power source configured to provide power to at least one pulsed electrical load. The system also includes a propulsion converter configured to drive a propulsion motor. The system further includes a controllable-field induction electrical machine coupled to the at least one pulsed load. The controllable-field induction electrical machine is configured to suppress one or more propulsion current harmonics generated by the propulsion converter that affect the at least one pulsed load.

Active harmonic filter and reactive power control system for naval ship power systems

A system includes multiple electrical nodes connected in series to a primary power source via transmission lines. Each node includes a power converter that can receive first power from the primary power source or another upstream node. The power converter can change a voltage level and/or a frequency of the first power. Each node also includes a high-speed synchronous rotating machine (HSRM), which includes an inertial storage flywheel, a rotating excitation assembly, stator windings, and a synchronous motor coupled to an induction generator. The HSRM can boost a voltage level between an input and output to compensate for a voltage drop of the first power. At least one of the nodes further includes an inductive power coupler to electrically couple the node to a mobile power source that provides second power to the node and receives a portion of the first power from the node using contactless inductive power transfer. The system includes a combination of AC and DC power transmission techniques and associated bidirectional power converters.

Multi-port subsea high-voltage power modulation and stored energy distribution system

A stored energy power source uses a wound-rotor induction machine (WRIM) to receive energy from an external source, store the energy in N energy storage elements (ESEs) via tertiary windings, and discharge the ESEs to deliver energy via a secondary winding to a load producing output. Each discharging ESE contributes to a total flux at the secondary winding to sum the individual ESEs voltages. These voltages can be stepped up or down by a transformation ratio between the secondary winding and each of the tertiary windings. A flywheel may be coupled to the secondary to store and delivery energy. Load factor power control can be used to stabilize the output voltage. The source may be configured to allow for the bi-directional flow of energy between an external power source, the ESEs, the flywheel and the load. The WRIM provides a safe, reliable and efficient system to provide high-level AC and DC output voltages.

A stored energy power source uses a wound-rotor induction machine (WRIM) to receive energy from a prime mover via a rotating shaft, provide magnetization reactive energy from a self-excited AC capacitor bank, store the energy in N energy storage elements (ESEs) via tertiary windings, and discharge the ESEs to deliver energy via a secondary winding to a load producing output. Techniques and methods related to a multi-mode operation of a synchronous electrical generator. The synchronous generator is configurable in at least two modes: a grid-power mode and a power-generation mode. In the power-generation mode, electrical power is generated in response to power produced by a prime mover. In the grid-power mode, the rotor is in standstill mode, and the configurable rotor winding is configured to generate a plurality of AC magnetic fields. The system provides for seamless transfer of power between grid-power to power generation using an energy storage unit and associated power conditioning apparatus.

Synchronous generator with configurable modality

A system includes a power distribution bus configured to distribute power from an electrical power source. The system also includes a plurality of electrical loads configured to receive portions of the power from the electrical power source. The system further includes a doubly-fed induction machine (DFIM) configured to reduce transmission impedance on the power distribution bus in response to a change in real or reactive power at one or more of the electrical loads, and reduce low frequency power oscillations at the source.

An example system includes a dynamo-electric machine. The dynamo-electric machine includes a rotor that is cylindrical and that is configured for rotation and a stator that is arranged relative to the rotor. The stator has a stepped configuration that defines a first diameter for the stator and a second diameter for the stator. The first diameter is greater than the second diameter. Zones of the stator at the first diameter hold direct-axis (D-axis) windings and zones of the stator at the second diameter hold quadrature axis (Q-axis) windings. An airgap between the rotor and the Q-axis windings is greater than an airgap between the rotor and the D-axis windings.

Dynamo-electric machine

A power transfer system includes a series of energy storage modules (ESMs) or energy storage devices (ESDs) that are coupled together to be able to transfer power between one another, as well as receive power from a power source, such as an onshore power generator. The energy storage modules may be hybrid energy storage modules, each including an electrical-machine-inertial energy store and an electro-chemical energy store. The energy storage modules are configured to receive constant-current DC or AC input from the power source, and are able to provide constant-current and constant-voltage output, either sequentially or simultaneously. The power transfer system allows the modules to operate independently or in conjunction with one another, should some of the connections of the system be broken. The energy storage modules may be used to provide power to underwater systems, for example sonar systems, weapons systems, or underwater vehicles.

An inductive power transfer system is used for transferring electrical power across a gap, such as an air gap or a liquid gap, such as to unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs). The power transfer system is a polyphase system that creates a travelling magnetic field in the air or liquid gap, implementing a resonant electro-magnetic (EM) field to allow larger gap separations and less precise alignments. The power transfer system may have a polyphase dynamoelectric machine attached to primary mechanical-inertial storage device with multiple stator and rotor ports connected to a polyphase traveling-wave inductive power transmitter apparatus. The system may be of use in transferring power to underwater vehicles in a subsea salt water environment. Such a power transfer system may part of a larger system for underwater power transfer, for instance at depths of at least 10 km, and/or at distances of 1 to 50 km.

Polyphase contactless induction power transfer system for transferring electrical power across gap

A system includes a prime mover configured to rotate a shaft. The system also includes a wound rotor induction generator (WRIG). The WRIG includes a rotor coupled to the shaft of the prime mover and configured to rotate when the shaft rotates, where the rotor includes a rotor winding. The WRIG also includes a stator winding electrically connected to a utility source and a load. When the stator winding receives first power from the utility source, the WRIG is configured to transform at least one of a voltage and a frequency of the first power before outputting at least a portion of the first power to the load. When the stator winding does not receive the first power from the utility source, the WRIG is configured to generate second power due to kinetic energy of the rotor and output at least a portion of the second power to the load.

Mobile hybrid electric power system

A transformer includes a magnetic core having multiple limbs. The transformer also includes a direct current (DC) bias winding wound around a specified one of the limbs. The transformer further includes a DC amplifier electrically connected to the DC bias winding. The DC amplifier is configured to receive a first signal associated with a load output current or voltage. The DC amplifier is also configured to determine an amount of a current for the DC bias winding based on the first signal. The DC amplifier is further configured to send the determined amount of current through the DC bias winding.

Actively-controlled power transformer and method for controlling

A system includes a power source configured to provide constant-current power to a medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) bus. The system also includes a first rotating electrical machine configured to receive the power from the MVDC bus. The system further includes a plurality of second rotating electrical machines connected in series with the first rotating electrical machine, with a long distance transmission line between adjacent rotating electrical machines. In addition, the system includes a flywheel energy storage coupled to each of the rotating electrical machines, where each flywheel energy storage is configured to store inertial energy. Each of the rotating electrical machines is electrically connected to a battery or ultra-capacitor subsystem and a pulse forming network (PFN).
