A quality processing system comprises an interface and a processing system. The interface is configured to receive a first quality message from a wireless end device in the first region wherein the first quality message indicates a first quality metric of the first region during the session, and receive a session quality message indicating a session quality metric for the session. The processing system is configured to process the first quality metric with the session quality metric to determine if the session problem occurred in the first region or the second region, generate an isolation message indicating in which of the first region or second region the problem occurred, and transfer the isolation message.

Regional quality correlation for wireless communications

A method is provided for measuring polarization dependent loss in an optical transmission system. In the method, a first optical signal is generated, and a polarization of the first optical signal is altered over time. The first optical signal is combined with a second optical signal from the optical transmission system to yield a combined optical signal, which is coherently detected to yield a radio frequency signal. A power of the radio frequency signal is measured. The measured power of the radio frequency signal is processed to generate an indication of the polarization dependent loss of the optical transmission system.

A method is provided for generating fault information associated with a communication channel. In the method, a time-varying error value associated with the communication channel is received. If the error value exceeds a first threshold, a first time value associated with the error value exceeding the first threshold is stored. If the error value then falls and remains below the first threshold for a first minimum time period before the error value exceeds and remains above a second threshold that is higher than the first threshold for a second minimum time period, the first time value is deleted; otherwise, a second time value associated with the error value exceeding the second threshold is stored. The fault information comprises the first time value and the second time value.

Method and system for connection admission control

A system and method for continuously monitoring neighboring network elements and determining physical connection topology and changes in topology among network elements. Each port in a network element capable of having physical connectivity to a port on an adjacent network element has a unique identification of the node and a unique identification of the port. The identification is both available to the network management system and continuously transmitted on the physical link between two ports in the network, thus identifying the transmitting port to the receiving port. As nodes and ports are added to or deleted from a network, a representation of the nodes or ports is added or removed from the network management system. The local operating program in each network element informs the network management system of changes, or changes are queried by a network management system. The transmission of identification takes place in overhead data channels, designated as topology trace channels, which are designed into the overall framework of the transmission system and its equipment. No information capacity that could support network customer traffic or network control traffic between network elements is pre-empted.

Network system and method for automatic discovery of topology using overhead bandwidth

A method and system for Connection Admission Control (CAC) in a communications network, such as an ATM formatted B-ISDN network, is provided. Using end-to-end virtual path structures and class-of-service separation, various network virtual connections may be administered using a connection server based on a weighted round robin or similar connection-serving algorithm. Network users aware of the network structure and the means by which queue lengths are determined may easily calculate a Sustainable Cell Rate (SCR) for the traffic they wish to introduce into the network path for transmission to a given destination. The user declared SCR, in addition to other user declared traffic parameters, determines the queue lengths allocated in the network switches, such that a required level of Quality of Service is maintained. A measurement of certain types of transmitted cells in a virtual path, such as idle, unassigned, or low-priority cells, is made at any single point along the virtual path, such as at the source switch. This measurement of cells that may be considered to be &ldquo;empty&rdquo;, i.e., available for use by high-priority cells, is used as the basis for a determination of the allowable connections that can be admitted to a virtual path.
