A hybrid gas compressor has at least one rotor and shroud which define a compressor gas path extending from an inlet to an outlet. The compressor includes at least two compression stages and one diffusion stage between the inlet and outlet, the compression stages including respective circumferential arrays of blades extending from the rotor and the diffusion stage including a circumferential array of vanes between the compression stages. Blade aerodynamic loadings may be controlled, particularly in the last stage, to provide desired compression characteristics across the compressor. A bleed outlet is optionally located between the inlet and outlet for bleeding from the gas path.

A device is provided which can serve one or more of the multiple functions of impeding rotation of a shaft de-coupled turbine rotor, selectively impeding rotation of a first spool of the engine, for example to permit a second spool to generate power for use in ground operation, and facilitating reduced aircraft ground speed.

A method of using a magnetic fluid clutch for torque measurement comprises steps of modulating electric current through a coil of the magnetic fluid clutch to maintain a steady-state quasi-solid phase of a magnetic fluid medium contained within the magnetic fluid clutch when the magnetic fluid clutch is clutched to transmit torque from a torque input end of the clutch to a torque output end of the clutch, thereby ensuring that the torque output end rotates in response to the rotation of the torque input end without relative rotational slippage therebetween; and measuring a deflection value associated with the magnetic fluid clutch. The clutch is thereby used as a combined torque measurement and clutch apparatus.

A method for gas turbine engine off-load starting includes using a starter connected to a rotor of a gas turbine engine to start the gas turbine engine while terminating or reducing torque transmission from the starter to accessory devices until a gas turbine engine starting cycle is completed and the gas turbine engine is operating under a self-sustaining condition.
