A health monitoring device that includes a data logger module that collects health information from a subject or clinician during specific time ranges that are part of a health monitoring schedule. The collected health information and/or the time ranges are determined in part by the content of the collected health information. The device records the collected health information along with a time stamp. The device also includes a clock and a time shift mode that allows a user to adjust the clock to a specified point in the health monitoring schedule so that the device operates at the specified point in the same manner as if the device had reached the specified point without intervention by the user to adjust the clock.

A health monitoring system which tracks the state of health of a patient and compiles a chronological health history of the patient uses a multiparametric monitor which periodically and automatically measures and records a plurality of physiological data from sensors in contact with the patient's body. The data collected is periodically uploaded to a database in which it is stored along with similar health histories for other patients. The monitor is preferably self-contained in a chest strap which is located on the patient's torso, and makes use of a controller which controls sampling of the desired data and storage of the data to a local memory device pending uploading to the database. The data includes voice sound data indicative of voice sounds made by the subject over a predetermined period of time.

Health monitoring system

A health monitoring system that monitors the health of a patient includes an ingestible capsule containing a medication to be consumed by a subject. A signal generator located within the capsule outputs an electrical signal having a predetermined characteristic indicative of said medication, said capsule and said medication being liberated by dissolution of the capsule in the stomach acid of a subject. A signal detector, preferably having an input in electrical contact with a portion of the subject's skin, is used to detects the electrical signal. This allows the ingestion of the medication to be tracked.

The more voluminous data collected is reduced and compressed prior to storage in the local memory device. Preferably, much of the monitor circuitry is run intermittently to conserve power. The monitor data is supplemented with subjective data (such as psychological and environmental conditions) collected from the patient using a handheld data input device which runs a program to solicit information from the patient. The subjective data collected is chronologically aligned with the monitor data in the database such that the health history of a patient includes both objective and subjective medical data.

An apparatus and method for stimulating and locating a nerve is described. The apparatus is closed-loop in nature in that the device is automated and is independent of the skill of the operator. The apparatus includes a stimulating probe having an array of electrodes, an automatic control means, and a response detecting means. Response feedback is analyzed according to an electrode selecting algorithm (incorporating a response interpreting algorithm) so that ongoing stimulation is restricted to a subset of the array which produces a criterion response with the least magnitude of stimulation. A method of use is also described. The device and method are also intended to permit optimal stimulation of a located nerve for therapeutic purposes.

Apparatus and method for locating a nerve

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for locating and identifying the function of specific peripheral nerves. In one embodiment, the present invention takes the form of a nerve stimulator which is used to locate nerves to assist in the administration of regional anesthesia. In another embodiment, the nerve stimulator is used to locate, identify the function of, and guard against the inadvertent cutting of specific nerves during surgical procedures. The apparatus of the present invention includes a stimulus delivery means, a response-detecting means and a means for automatically modulating the magnitude of the stimulus.
