Amides of unsaturated cyclic keto acids, useful as friction improvers in lubricating oils, may be prepared by reaction of an amine such as ethanolamine with an unsaturated cyclic keto acid.

Disclosed are novel compounds prepared by the reaction of an adduct of a phosphosulfurized polyisoalkylene or alpha olefin with an acidified hexavalent molybdenum salt which give enhanced copper corrosion protection relative to the non-molybdenum treated adducts when incorporated in lubricants. Also disclosed is the combination of such compounds with a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, which combination imparts to lubricants an oxidation inhibition greater than is obtainable with either the zinc dialkyldithiophosphate or the molybdenum-containing adduct alone.

A lubricating oil composition characterized by having a Total Base Number from about 5 to 40 comprising a mineral lubricating oil, an overbased calcium sulfonate, a zinc dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate, an ethoxylated alkylphenol, an alkenylsuccinimide, a polymethacrylate, an ethylene-propylene copolymer, an alkylated diphenylamine and an N-alkylglycine derivative having the formula: ##STR1## in which R is a hydrocarbyl radical having from about 10 to 25 carbon atoms, R' represents hydrogen or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or an aminoalkyl radical having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms and R' represents an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --NH).sub.x H radical in which x has a value from 1 to 3, or ##STR2## in which X represents an oxygen atom or a divalent N--R' radical and R and R' have the values noted above.

A marine crankcase lubricating oil composition characterized by having a Total Base Number from about 3 to 10 comprising a mineral lubricating oil, an overbased calcium alkylphenolate, a zinc dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate, an ethoxylated alkylphenol, and an N-alkylglycine derivative having the formula: ##STR1## in which R is a hydrocarbyl radical having from about 10 to 25 carbon atoms, R' represents hydrogen or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or an aminoalkyl radical having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms and R' represents an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --NH).sub.x H radical in which x has a value from 1 to 3, or ##STR2## in which X represents an oxygen atom or a divalent N-R' radical and R and R' have the values noted above.
