Multi-layer optical films that can be utilized as polarizer or mirror films and can be incorporated into optical stacks. The optical film includes a plurality of alternating polymeric first and second interference layers numbering greater than 50 and disposed between, and integrally formed with, first and second skin layers, each of the first and second interference layers has an average thickness less than 250 nm. The first and second interference layers and the first and second skin layers are compositions that include polyester.

Polarizer film

A multilayer partial mirror includes a plurality of alternating first a second polymeric layers numbering at least 50 in total, disposed between, and integrally formed with, opposing first and second polymeric skin layers. For a visible wavelength range extending from about 420 nm to about 680 nm and an incident light propagating in an incident plane that includes a x-direction, and for an s-polarized incident light, the multilayer partial mirror has an average reflectance Rs1 for a first incident angle of less than about 10 degrees, and an average reflectance Rs2 for a second incident angle of greater than about 45 degrees, and for a p-polarized incident light, the multilayer partial mirror has an average reflectance Rp1 for the first incident angle, and an average reflectance Rp2 for the second incident angle. Each of Rs2/Rs1 and Rp2/Rp1 is greater than about 1.15.

Multilayer partial mirror, backlight, and display system

Uncured aqueous composition comprising surfactant and a blend of (a) a first sulfonated polyester having a glass transition temperature not greater than 75° C. that is not sulfonated polyethylene naphthalate, (b) a second, sulfonated polyester that is a sulfonated polyethylene naphthalate, (c) melamine-formaldehyde crosslinker, and (d) an epoxy silane coupling agent; and cured composition thereof. Compositions described herein are useful, for example, for making primed film for release liners applications.

Composition and article comprising the same

Photochromic article having first and second opposed major surfaces comprising a first, transparent layer having first and second opposed major surfaces, the first layer comprising thermoplastic, a second, transparent layer having first and second opposed major surfaces, the second layer comprising photochromic dye and amorphous copolyester, wherein the first major surface of the second layer is adjacent to the second major surface of the first layer, and a third layer having first and second opposed major surfaces, wherein the first major surface of the third layer is adjacent to the second major surface of the second layer. Embodiments of photochromic article described herein are useful, for example in eyewear, window films, security films, decorative films, electronic devices (i.e., having a display with a photochromic article).

Photochromic articles

Multilayer reflective polarizers are described. In particular, multilayer reflective polarizers that include both crystalline high index layers and low index layers are disclosed. These reflective polarizers may be particularly suitable for automotive, architectural, and industrial applications.

Multilayer reflective polarizer with crystalline low index layers

A light redirecting film includes a first layer disposed on a second layer with structured major surfaces of the first and second layers facing each other. An optically reflective layer or a metal layer is disposed between the first and second layers. The first layer can be a hot melt adhesive layer and the second layer can be a polymeric layer. The first and second layers can be unitary layers. The first layer can be a first polymeric layer having a softening temperature T1 and the second layer can be a second polymeric layer having a softening temperature T2 greater than T1. Heating and/or applying pressure to the film changes an optical characteristic of the film by less than about 5%.

Light redirecting film

A multilayer film comprises first, second, and third layers. The first layer comprises at least one aromatic polyester, and has a loss modulus at 1 hertz and 25&#xb0; C. of at least 70 megapascals. The second layer is thermoplastic and has a loss modulus at 1 hertz and 25&#xb0; C. of less than or equal to 60 megapascals and comprises a thermoplastic elastomer and a polyamide. The third layer contacts the second layer opposite the first layer and has a loss modulus at 1 hertz and 25&#xb0; C. of at least 70 megapascals. The second layer is sandwiched between the first and third layers. A method of making the multilayer film by coextrusion is also disclosed.

Multilayer film and method of making the same

A substrate including a self-supporting tri-layer stack is described. The tri-layer stack includes first and second outer layers and a biaxially oriented layer disposed between and in direct contact with the first and second outer layers. The biaxially oriented layer may include a first polyester having greater than 45 mole percent naphthalate units and greater than 45 mole percent ethylene units. Each of the first and second outer layers includes a second polyester which may include 40 to 50 mole percent naphthalate units, at least 25 mole percent ethylene units, and 10 to 25 mole percent of branched or cyclic C4-C10 alkyl units.

Substrate including a self-supporting tri-layer stack

The present disclosure provides a printable composition. The printable composition includes a polymer, a polymerizable component, a temporary solvent, a photoinitiator, and optionally an inhibitor. The present disclosure also provides an article including an integral blend of a thermoset polymer and a second polymer different from the thermoset polymer. Further, the present disclosure provides a method of making an article. The method includes (i) providing a printable composition; (ii) selectively curing the printable composition to form a gelled article; and (iii) removing at least a portion of the temporary solvent from the gelled article. The method may optionally include (iv) curing unpolymerized polymerizable component remaining before or after step (iii). Also, methods are provided, including receiving, by a manufacturing device having one or more processors, a digital object comprising data specifying a plurality of layers of an article, the article including: an integral blend of 8 to 50 wt. %, inclusive, of a thermoset polymer and 30 to 90 wt. %, inclusive, of a second polymer different from the thermoset polymer, wherein the weight percent is based on the total weight of the article; and generating, with the manufacturing device by an additive manufacturing process, the article based on the digital object. A system is provided, including a display that displays a 3D model of an article; and one or more processors that, in response to the 3D model selected by a user, cause a 3D printer to create a physical object of an article.

Printable compositions including polymeric and polymerizable components, articles, and methods of making articles therefrom

The present disclosure relates to films having at least a first profiled layer and a second layer having an inverse profile of the first layer. Those films can be used as protection tapes for various surfaces. Exemplary uses of the films of the present disclosure include leading edge protection tapes for rotor blades.

Profiled films

The present method comprises providing a flexible web substrate (e.g., polymeric flexible web substrates) that forms at least part of a component of a device, coating so as to wet-out on and cover all or a substantial portion of a major surface on one side or both sides of the flexible web substrate with flowable polymeric material, while the flexible web substrate is moving in a down-web direction, and solidifying the polymeric material so as to form one cleaning layer on the major surface of one side or both sides of the flexible web substrate. The present invention can be utilized in a continuous in-line manufacturing process. In applications of the present invention where the flexible web substrate will not form a component of a device, the present invention broadly provides a method for cleaning particles from a flexible web of indefinite length. Each cleaning layer forms a substantially adhesive bond to the major surface that is readily removable without damaging or leaving a substantial residue of cleaning layer material on the major surface. A substantial number of the particles that were on this major surface are captured by and removable with the cleaning layer.

Method of producing a component of a device, and the resulting components and devices

Multilayer infrared (IR) reflecting films are provided. An optical repeating unit of the film include a plurality of optical polymeric layers arranged to reflect light by constructive and destructive interference. Optical layer A is a high refractive index polymeric layer, and optical layer B is a low refractive index isotropic polymeric layer containing fluoropolymers. The film has an average reflectance of about 50% to about 100% in a near infrared wavelength range of about 850 nm to about 1850 nm, and an average transmission of about 70% to about 90% in a visible light range.

Transfer films, articles made therewith, and methods of making and using transfer films to form an electrical stack are disclosed. The transfer films may include a plurality of co-extensive electrical protolayers forming an electrical protolayer stack, at least selected or each electrical protolayer independently comprising at least 25 wt % sacrificial material and a thermally stable material and having a uniform thickness of less than 25 micrometers. The transfer films may include a plurality of co-extensive electrical protolayers forming an electrical protolayer stack, at least selected or each protolayer independently exhibiting a complex viscosity of between 10and 10Poise at a shear rate of 100/s when heated to a temperature between its Tand T.

Transfer films, articles made therewith, and layer-by-layer methods of making and using transfer films to form an inorganic optical stack are disclosed.

Layer-by-layer assembled multilayer lamination transfer films

A retarder including first and second outer layers and a birefringent layer disposed between and in direct contact with the first and second outer layers is described. The birefringent layer may include a first polyester having greater than 45 mole percent naphthalate units and greater than 45 mole percent ethylene units. Each of the first and second outer layers includes a second polyester which may include 40 to 50 mole percent naphthalate units, at least 25 mole percent ethylene units, and 10 to 25 mole percent of branched or cyclic C4-C10 alkyl units. The retarder has a retardance in a range of 1 micrometer to 100 micrometers.
