Described herein is a chemical class of odorless thiols which can serve as reducing agents. This chemical class involves thiols which can be used as reducing agents for permanent styling treatments, depilatory compositions and other applications. The odorless thiols are thiols having a heterocyclic quaternary ammonium salt in their molecule.

A method for shaping keratin fibres comprising: providing a crosslinking composition, wherein the crosslinking composition comprises: an active agent, wherein the active agent is selected from the group consisting of: oxoethanoic acid, 2,2-dihydroxyethanoic acid, 2,2'-oxybis(2-hydroxy)-ethanoic acid, a derivative thereof, and mixtures thereof; and wherein the active agent has a molecular weight of 500 g/mol or less; a photocatalyst; a cosmetically acceptable carrier; and applying the crosslinking composition to keratin fibres, mechanically shaping the keratin fibres with an appliance or implement, and exposing the composition to electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of from about 300 nm to about 750 nm. A hair straightening and/or hair relaxing method comprising: applying a hair care composition to hair, wherein the composition comprises a sugar, a buffering agent and a cosmetically acceptable carrier; and wherein, where the composition is heated to a temperature of at least 100&#xb0; C., the composition comprises from about 6% to about 20% reducing sugar; hair drying; providing a hair straightening appliance at a temperature of from about 100&#xb0; C. to about 280&#xb0; C. and mechanically straightening the hair with the appliance.
