A recording head for writing data on tracks of a data storage medium is provided. The recording head includes a writer having a write pole and a trailing shield. The write pole includes a pole tip configured to write on the tracks of the data storage medium. The recording head also includes first and second writing-assistance wires positioned between the pole tip and the trailing shield in a down-track direction to enable a writing-assistance current to be provided to produce an assist magnetic field that augments a write field produced by the write pole.

Dual wire assisted magnetic recording

A set of patterns written to a magnetic recording medium are found that result in a relatively high and/or low error when read back. Upon writing subsequent to the determining of the set of patterns, one pattern of the set of the patterns is identified within a data segment ready to be written to the magnetic recording medium. The data segment is written with a changed bit spacing in response to identifying that the one pattern of the set of the patterns is within the data segment.

A hard disc drive includes a slider including a first reader and a second reader. The hard disc drive also includes a magnetic recording medium and a controller. The controller is configured to determine a distance between the slider and the magnetic recording medium based at least in part on amplitudes of read signals from both the first reader and the second reader.

Head media spacing using multiple readers

First and second tracks of a magnetic recording medium are read simultaneously via a first reader that provides a first signal based on detecting a total perpendicular field of the first and second tracks. The first and second tracks are read simultaneously via a second reader that provides a second signal based on detecting a total longitudinal field of the first and second tracks. Data is detected from the first and second signals.

In one implementation, the disclosure provides a method comprising detecting one or more areas of a storage medium having a data pattern with a plurality of consecutive bits, where the consecutive bits have the same polarity. The method further comprises encoding additional information on a section of the one or more detected areas, where the section of the one or more detected areas has a signal to noise ratio (SNR) higher than SNR of the other areas of the storage media.

Media storage areal density

First and second nominal head-to-media spacings of a magnetic recording head are determined that result in tracks being written to a magnetic recording medium at respective narrower and wider tracks widths. Three or more adjacent tracks of user data are written to the magnetic recording medium using one of the first and second nominal head-to-media spacings so that the adjacent tracks alternate between the narrower and wider track widths.
