Video editing methods and systems enable an editor to edit a video project for which source media assets are located at a media storage server located remotely from the editor with substantially the same fidelity and editing feature set that would be available if the source media assets and editor were co-located. A video editing client used by the editor maintains a persistent cache of proxy media with the layers of the video project stored independently, facilitating editing with combinations locally originated assets and remote assets. The client requests frames not already cached from the remote server via a low bandwidth network. Unless a frame is purged from the cache, no frame is requested from the server more than once. A multi-level priority prefetching scheme, including sequence-based prefetching, populates the cache with frames likely to be requested during editing.

Full fidelity remote video editing

An image data processing system is configured to store image data with redundant protection in the form of a redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID). An input card is configured to receive an input stream of real-time digital video data, possibly provided by a video tape recorder. The video image data is stored and a processor is arranged to perform processing operations upon the stored video data. The input card receives an input stream of real-time video data and the processor performs a first writing operation to write the video data to storage () in real-time without parity. The processor then performs a reading operation to read the data from storage and performs a data manipulation () upon the data to generate parity information to create protected video data. The processor then performs a second writing operation to write the protected video data back to storage. In this way, RAID calculations are performed after the video data has been capture and as part of other post capture processes including proxy generation and possibly color space conversion.

Image processing

Data is transferred over a network having many image data processing systems ( ). A high bandwidth network ( ) is connected to each of the data processing systems and to each of several storage systems ( ). Each of the storage systems is operated under the direct control of one of the processing systems. A request is issued from a first processing system to access a data storage system controlled by a second processing system over a low bandwidth network ( ). A bandwidth assessment process assesses an extent to which the second processing system requires access to its local storage system. The first processing system is given access to the second storage system if an assessment is made to the effect that local access requirements are identified as being below a predetermined threshold.
