The invention discloses a method of sending pictures for display individually or as a series of pictures in a mini-clip on a receiving device during a lengthy file transfer. The invention, although not strictly limited to, is particularly suitable for use in a Bluetooth environment using the Object Exchange (OBEX) protocol. In an embodiment of the invention, a picture or series of pictures () are encapsulated within a Application Parameters header of the ongoing long file transfer. When picture data is too large to fit into a single header the data may be segmented and spanned over several headers. The headers contain parameters that define display characteristics such as picture display time and mini-clip or series refresh rate, thereby lending the method particularly well for the display of advertising content.

Transferring objects within an ongoing file transfer operation

When an ad hoc network is formed between short range wireless devices, at least one device assumes the role of an ad hoc network information provider for the new piconet. In this role, the device allocates a browsing hierarchy of service classes in its service registry. The service classes will provide a record to characterize the ad hoc network. When a new wireless device arrives within the communication range of any member of the ad hoc network, its inquiry signals are answered by the first member detecting the inquiry. If that first member is an ad hoc network information provider, it responds with information accessed from its service registry characterizing the ad hoc network. If, instead, an ordinary device in the ad hoc network is the first to respond to the inquiry signals of the arriving device, the device responds with the address of the ad hoc network information provider. The arriving device then pages the ad hoc network information provider to obtain information characterizing the ad hoc network.

The invention concerns a method of communicating between an access point () of a short range rf network and a user terminal () of the short range rf network. The method comprises using a first short range rf transceiver () at the access point for access communication with a user terminal () for communicating information relating to establishment of a connection with the user terminal (), and using a second short range rf transceiver () at the access point for user data communication for communicating user data with the user terminal.

The invention is suitable for use with short range radio communication technologies including Bluetooth short range connection technology. In an embodiment of the invention, the invention is employed within a Bluetooth information Kiosk environment. In the embodiment, a Kioskestablishes a connectionwith a plurality of handheld devices () using the Object Exchange (OBEX) protocol. The download status indicator is estimated, for example, by the Kioskfrom models generated from usage statistics collected from previous data transfers. The download status indicator and related information is sent in an Application Parameters headercomprising of a plurality of triplets and is updated repeatedly in subsequent Application Parameters headers. The download status indicator is represented in picture format and takes the form of, for example, a progress bar displayed on the receiving device depicting the amount of data successfully downloaded.

A method of and a system for controlling low power radio frequency activity of terminals, including a method of selecting and activating a wireless terminal. A signal, including a transmission indication, is transmitted by a first terminal. A second terminal receives the signal a number of times and compares the received transmission indications with predetermined indication values. When the comparison shows that a predetermined number of satisfactory transmission indications have been received by the second terminal, the second terminal commences transmission. The transmission indication can be messages having tail portions with a preselected set of states.
