A carriage having a thickness no thicker than a thickness of the scan module perpendicular to the first surface, the carriage configured to receive the scan module and to move the scan module in a direction of travel. A v-bearing coupled to the carriage proximate to one end of the carriage and protruding from the carriage in a direction perpendicular to the first surface. A method of printing on a household surface can comprise the steps of selecting a household surface for ink-jet printing; preparing the household surface by applying a pre-coat material to the household surface, wherein the pre-coat material can be configured to adhere to the household surface and accept a water-based ink-jet ink composition to a degree greater than the household surface in an uncoated condition; optionally, allowing the pre-coat material to substantially dry on the household surface; and ink-jet printing a color-containing ink-jet ink onto the pre-coat material after the pre-coat material has substantially dried on the household surface. Additionally, a method of reducing color to color bleed when ink-jet printing on a household surface can comprise the steps of providing a digital image having a first color pixel pattern and a second color pixel pattern; digitally masking the first color pixel pattern by removing pixels and causing the first color pixel pattern and the second color pixel pattern to be separated by a distance of at least one pixel, thereby forming a modified digital image; and ink-jet printing the modified digital image.

Preparations for ink-jet printing on common household surfaces

An automatic document feeder (ADF) has a paper path that starts with an input tray, leads to an operational station such as a scanner, and then ends with a substantially vertical output tray. The ADF has a mechanism for picking off an individual media sheet from a stack of sheets in the input tray and propelling the sheet to the operational station where a function is performed on the sheet. Thereafter the ADF propels the sheet partially into the output tray, and momentarily stops or reverses the direction of travel of the media sheet before finally driving the entire sheet into the output tray. This ensures that if the topmost sheet in a stack in the output tray which is being lifted up by the sheet being driven into the output tray, the topmost sheet will be fall back down to a rest position in the output tray and will not spill out of the output tray. The combination ADF and scanner can be operated so that it will automatically detect whether a standard-sized sheet of media is being fed into the scanner in landscape orientation or an over-sized sheet of media is being fed into the scanner in portrait orientation. In the case of the latter, first and second portions of the over-sized sheet are successively registered over the transparent platen of the scanner and scanned. The over-sized sheet is thereafter ejected from the scanner into an output tray. The resulting digital images of the first and second portions of the over-sized sheet are rotated, stitched together by a control circuit using software and/or firmware algorithms and the complete image of the over-sized sheet is stored in a memory, faxed or printed.

Automatic document feeder with improved sheet handling capabilities and method of feeding and scanning over-sized media sheets

A transmission for transmitting rotary power in forward and reverse directions from a programmable source of input motion such as an electric motor uses individually rotatable coaxially mounted lock plates each having a pawl receiving socket therein providing access to an arcuate slot of selected angular length permits engagement and disengagement of the transmission only when input torque is applied thereto in forward and reverse directions to rotate the transmission input gear through pre-defined angles. The pawl is part of a frictionally driven shift arm on which a driven shift gear is also mounted whereby the driven shift gear is pivotally moved into and out of engagement with the output gear or gears of the transmission when the pawl is pivotally moved out of or into the sockets in the lock plates. Rotation limit stops are provided on the lock plates at selected angular positions so that the transmission can be engaged or disengaged for transmission of torque in both forward and reverse directions only when the motor is rotated through a sequence of predetermined angles in predetermined directions.

Auxiliary sheet feeder for an inkjet printing mechanism

A pick mechanism including a pick roller, a pick arm supporting the pick roller and an actuation system adapted to move the pick arm from an idle position to a pick position and impart additional normal force to the pick roller. The magnitude of the additional normal force, which is greatest when the tray is full, decreases as the size of the stack in the tray decreases.

A transmission for transmitting power from a printing device drive to drive a media pick roller to pick individual sheets of print media from a supply tray through the printing device without the necessity of requiring a separate pick roller motor and controls. The transmission uses a sun gear and a planet gear with a cam track and follower to move the planet gear into and out of driving relationship with the pick roller.
