A multistage emulsion polymerization process comprises polymerizing a first monomer composition comprising from 50 to 95 weight percent of vinyl acetate, from 5 to 40 weight percent of at least one vinyl ester of a Cto Cunsaturated carboxylic acid, and optionally up to 40 weight percent of ethylene, all based on the total weight of monomers in the first monomer composition, to produce a first stage polymer. A second monomer composition comprising 40 to 89.95 weight percent of at least one ester of methacrylic acid or a vinyl aromatic monomer, 10 to 59.95 weight percent of at least one ester of acrylic acid, and from 0.05 to 10 weight percent of at least one comonomer with acid functionality, based on the total weight of monomers in the second monomer composition, is then polymerized in the presence of the first stage polymer to produce a second stage polymer.

Polymer dispersions, their preparation and use

An aqueous polymer dispersion is produced by multistage emulsion polymerization, in which a monomer composition I comprising 19 to 29 wt % hard monomers and 64 to 74 wt % soft monomers is polymerized to produce a first polymer phase and then a monomer composition II comprising 65 to 95 wt % hard monomers and 5 to 35 wt % soft monomers is polymerized to produce a second polymer phase. Monomer composition I also comprises from 1 to 5 wt % of at least one monomer selected from ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acids, phosphonic acids, phosphoric acids, carboxylic acids, carboxylic amides, carboxylic anhydrides and mixtures thereof and 1 to 7.5 wt % of ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing keto groups. The weight ratio of monomer composition I to monomer composition II ranges from 50:50 to 65:35 and the polymer dispersion also contains a water-soluble cross-linking component selected from polyfunctional carboxylic hydrazides and/or polyfunctional amines.

Aqueous polymer dispersions

An aqueous copolymer dispersion is formed by emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising (a) 20 to 80 wt. % of one or more (meth)acrylic acid esters A, whose homopolymer(s) have a T&#x3e;25&#xb0; C. and at least one has a biorenewable carbon content of at least 50 wt. % of the total carbon content of the ester; (b) 19 to 79 wt. % of one or more (meth)acrylic acid esters B whose homopolymer(s) have a T&#x3c;25&#xb0; C.; (c) 0.5 to 10 wt. % of at least one monomer selected from unsaturated sulfonic, phosphoric and phosphonic acids, and unsaturated carboxylic acids, anhydrides and amides thereof; (d) up to 10% by weight of one or more functional monomers selected from hydrolysable silane compounds, epoxy-containing compounds, ureido-containing compounds and carbonyl-containing compounds, and (e) less than 5 wt. % of one or more further monomers, wherein the total percentages of comonomers (a) to (e) equals 100%.

Waterborne acrylic dispersions with high biorenewable content

In a multi-stage emulsion polymerization process, a first monomer composition comprising from about 60 weight percent to about 95 weight percent of at least one vinyl ester, and from about 5 weight percent to about 40 weight percent ethylene is polymerized in a first stage under ethylene pressure to produce a first stage product having a Tof less than 20&#xb0; C. Then, in a second stage, a second monomer composition comprising at least 95 weight percent of a meth(acrylic)ester or a mixture of at least two different (meth)acrylic esters is polymerized in the presence of said first stage product, wherein the (meth)acrylic ester(s) is selected such that the polymer produced by said second monomer composition has a Tof 5 to 90&#xb0; C.

What are described are coating compositions comprising pigments and/or fillers and multistage polyvinyl ester dispersions as binders. These binders are produced by a selected multistage process in which a polyvinyl ester dispersion is obtained in a first stage, monomers in dissolved or pure form or in the form of an emulsion are added to the reaction mixture in a second stage and then the polymerization is started again. The polyvinyl ester dispersions comprise polymerized silanes and/or epoxides or the polyvinyl ester dispersions have only a small content of protective colloids, if any. The coating compositions formulated with the multistage polyvinyl ester dispersions obtained in this way are notable for a very high weathering resistance.

Aqueous copolymer dispersions for a variety of uses, including coating compositions or binders for plasters and paints, are disclosed. The aqueous copolymer dispersions may comprise one or more silicon containing compounds, in particular hydrolyzable silane compounds without any additional reactive group.

An aqueous polymer composition is described comprising a homogeneous acrylic polymer dispersion produced by emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising: (A) from 85 to 99.9 wt % of one or more main monomers selected from C-C-alkyl esters of acrylic acid or C-C-alkyl esters of methacrylic acid, styrene, and vinyl toluene in such a ratio as to produce a polymer having a Tg in the range of &#x2212;20 to +65&#xb0; C.; and (B) from 0.1 to 5 wt % of at least one stabilizing monomer selected from ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids or amides thereof, ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides or amides thereof, ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acids, ethylenically unsaturated phosphoric acids, and ethylenically unsaturated phosphonic acids. The emulsion polymerization is conducted in the presence of 0.05 to 3 wt %, based on the total weight of monomers in the monomer mixture, of a chain transfer agent (C).

A wood protection paint comprises a copolymer emulsion prepared by an emulsion polymerization process, in which a first monomer composition comprising from 60 weight percent to 95 weight percent of at least one vinyl ester, and from 5 weight percent to 40 weight percent ethylene is polymerized in a first stage under ethylene pressure to produce a first stage product having a Tof less than 25&#xb0; C. Then, in a second stage, a second monomer composition selected such that the polymer produced by the second monomer composition has a Tof at least 95&#xb0; C.

Plasters and renders and paints, copolymer dispersions and their use Compositions containing selected polymer dispersions, colloidal silica, fillers and pigments are described. These can be formulated to give plasters and renders or paints which are distinguished by excellent abrasion resistance, little tendency to soiling, high water vapor permeability, good adhesion and good weathering stability. The compositions according to the invention can be processed to give plasters and renders or paints which have a nanostructured surface and which differ from conventionally produced surfaces.

A description is given of a concrete molding which is coated with cement-bound mineral coating composition (cement slurry) and with a transparent varnish, the transparent varnish comprising as binder an aqueous polymer dispersion and also at least one anionic emulsifier containing at least one phosphate and/or phosphonate group. The concrete molding is distinguished by high gloss and can be used in particular as rooftile.

The invention relates to a method for producing coated mineral shaped bodies by applying an aqueous coating agent containing a polymer dispersion serving as a bonding agent and at least one aqueous styrene maleic anhydride copolymer solution. The shaped body is subsequently hardened and the coating agent is dried. The invention is characterized in that the at least one aqueous styrene maleic anhydride copolymer solution is added to the polymer dispersion after completion of the polymerization. The shaped bodies coated in such a manner exhibit an improved efflorescence behavior. The method is particularly suited for coating roofing tiles and fibrated concrete slabs.

A polymer dispersion having a minimum film-forming temperature in the range from 0 to 40.degree. C.; from 65 to 95% by weight of hard monomers B whose homopolymers have a glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) above 65.degree. C.; from 0 to 4% by weight of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or carboxamides C which are copolymerizable with A and B; from 0 to 5% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated monomers D containing keto groups; and from 0 to 10% by weight of other ethylenically unsaturated monomers E which do not contain a nitrogen atom, where the weight percentages in each case are based on the overall amount of the polymer of the second stage, in a weight ratio of the monomer composition I to the monomer composition II of from 50:50 to 75:25.

Autocrosslinking aqueous dispersions characterized by an MFT of from 0.degree. to about 50.degree. C. include at least one carbonyl-containing soft latex polymer having an MFT of below about 20.degree. C., at least one hard latex polymer having an MFT of above about 25.degree. C., and at least one polyfunctional carboxylic hydrazide. The aqueous polymer dispersions are used as binders for non-blocking, scratch-resistant and chemical-resistant coatings and as binders for clear coat and pigmented coating systems.
