Device for the accelerated cooling of a continuous substrate moving

A method and apparatus for continuously treating a strip of hot dip-galvanized steel. The method comprises the steps of rapidly reheating the strip to a predetermined temperature between 460.degree. C. and 600.degree. C., with a heating flux greater than 180 kWatts per meter squared based for each face of the strip; maintaining the strip at a substantially constant temperature for a predetermined period of time lasting between 10 and 30 seconds; and subsequently cooling the strip rapidly to a temperature below 420.degree. C., using a cooling flux of a magnitude greater than 100 kWatts per meter squared for each face of the strip. The step of rapidly reheating is performed following a drying operation conducted on the strip as it exits from a zinc bath. The apparatus comprises various elements for performing the method, as well as a vessel containing the zinc bath, redirecting rolls which define an upward and substantially vertical trajectory for the strip and a drying mechanism disposed along the trajectory downstream of the vessel's exit. Preferably, the rapidly heating of the strip is accomplished using an induction furnace operating at a frequency between 100 and 500 kHz, and the rapid cooling is provided by nozzles which, in turn, deliver a mist or fine spray of water and air.

Method and apparatus for continuous treatment of a strip of hot dip

A cooling apparatus for a cylindrical member in linear motion comprises a tubular conduit through which the cylindrical member passes axially, an envelope surrounding the tubular conduit and forming therewith an annular chamber therebetween closed at its ends by an upstream wall and a downstream wall, respectively, cooling agent being introduced into the annular chamber. The tubular conduit is pierced radially by a plurality of a straight passages providing communication between the annular chamber and the internal space in the tubular conduit. These passages are located in planes perpendicular to and axially spaced along the longitudinal axis of the tubular conduit and are equally circumferentially spaced within each plane and angularly displaced with respect to the passages in the adjacent planes. Cooling agent passes through the passages radially inwardly and is drained from the internal space of the tubular conduit.

Apparatus for cooling a cylindrical member in linear motion

The cooling device comprises a supply chamber disposed around a vertical duct and having a front wall which at a spacing intimately follows the shape of the vertical duct, and an evacuation chamber disposed around the supply chamber and separated therefrom by an intermediate wall. The front wall is formed with a number of passages extending towards the vertical duct. Some of these passages open into the supply chamber and the remainder of the passages are connected to tubes which extend through the supply chamber and the intermediate wall and open into the evacuation chamber. The supply chamber comprises means for supplying cooling liquid, and the evacuation chamber comprises means for evacuating cooling liquid.

Device for cooling a metal during castings

A device for casting a metal in the pasty phase in a continuous casting mold comprises a vertical conduit disposed upstream of the mold and provided externally with cooling means a distributor member disposed substantially at the inlet of the conduit to deflect the metal flowing from a casting nozzle towards the inner surface of the vertical conduit which may be extended by a tubular element penetrating into the mold and an inlet section for the conduit at least the inner surface of which is formed by refractory material, the distributor member being disposed in the inlet section. The device may have an injector for injecting a gaseous agent into the vertical conduit below the distributor member, and a further device for causing the metal to rotate in the inlet section.

Device for casting a metal in the pasty phase

In a secondary cooling zone below a continuous casting mold there is provided one or more chambers having an anterior wall with apertures facing the continuously cast metal product at a given distance from the surface of the product. Pressurized cooling liquid is supplied to the apertures to form a continuous layer of pressurized cooling liquid flowing in the direction of travel of the product.

Apparatus and method for cooling a continuously cast metal product

An upper transverse chamber and a lower transverse chamber have apertures for the passage of cooling agent to a product passing between them. At least the upper chamber is divided into a central compartment corresponding to the central zone of the product, and two lateral compartments, corresponding respectively to the two edge zones of the product. The division into compartments is achieved by partitions which are perpendicular to the bottom of the upper chamber. The partitions form, inside of the upper chamber, a channel converging in the direction of motion of the product.

Apparatus for cooling a metal product in motion

A metal product having at least one plane surface, e.g. steel strip, is cooled by means of an aqueous fluid as it moves along a predetermined path by apparatus comprising a wall disposed opposite the plane surface of the product and substantially parallel thereto so as to form a chamber of substantially constant thickness between the plane surface and the wall, at least one aperture in the wall communicating with the chamber for the passage of the aqueous fluid connected to the aperture through the wall. The aperture is connected to a source of the aqueous fluid. The rate of flow of the aqueous fluid and the spacing between the wall and the plane surface are both adjustable.

Apparatus for cooling a moving metal product

A metal product, such as a steel strip or a mill roll, is cooled by spraying a coolant towards a surface of the product travelling along a given path, by means of cooling apparatus comprising two hollow caissons arranged one inside the other and rigidly connected together to constitute a unit. The caissons cool the strip contained within a tunnel. The method is applied to the product surface and extends across the path of the product surface. Each caisson has a plurality of holes in a wall which is to face the product surface, each hole of the outer caisson being paired with a coaxially aligned hole of the inner caisson. A coolant sprayer is fixed in each pair of holes. Preferably, the sprayers are supplied with air from the inner caisson and water from the outer caisson, the water being atomized by the air. The path containing the prouduct is enclosed within a tunnel wherein ends of the tunnel are enclosed by continuous curtains of water which contact the product and effectively seal the ends of the tunnel.

Cooling metal products

Continuously cooling a rolled metal product emerging from the last stand of a rolling mill by spraying a liquid coolant through at least one outlet orifice of at least one hollow housing onto a rolled product vertically downwardly in the form of a compact jet of liquid which does not include any gaseous constituents and all the molecules of which are at the same speed in a given cross-section transverse to the direction of the jet.

Cooling of rolled metal products

A metal product, such as a steel strip or a mill roll, is cooled by spraying a coolant towards a surface of the product travelling along a given path, by means of cooling apparatus comprising two hollow caissons arranged one inside the other and rigidly connected together to constitute a unit. The unit is located adjacent the product surface and extends across the path of the product surface. Each caisson has a plurality of holes in a wall which is to face the product surface, each hole of the outer caisson being paired with a coaxially aligned hole of the inner caisson. A coolant sprayer is fixed in each pair of holes. Preferably, the sprayers are supplied with air from the inner caisson and water from the outer caisson, the water being atomized by the air.

Apparatus for cooling metal products

A steel section 6 to 40 mm thick, emerging from a hot rolling mill at 1000.degree. to 800.degree. C. is surface quenched for 2 to 6 seconds at a cooling rate of the order of 1.5 to 5 MW/m.sup.2. During subsequent self-tempering of the quenched surface by heat from the remainder, the section tends to an equalization temperature of 500.degree. to 700.degree. C.

Method of producing steel sections of improved quality

Cooling apparatus for cooling metal sections comprises a series of sprayers for simultaneously spraying a mixture of liquid and gas. Each sprayer has a gas inlet at one end and a mixture outlet at the other end. One or more liquid inlets are provided between two distinct peripheral shoulders. An elongate gas-supply manifold has outlet orifices adapted to seat the gas-inlet-side shoulders of the respective sprayers in a gas-tight manner. An elongate liquid-supply manifold has outlet orifices adapted to seat the mixture-outlet-side shoulders of the respective sprayers in a liquid-tight manner.
