An optical wireless communication (OWC) system comprising a first device comprising a transceiver apparatus and a plurality of further devices each comprising a respective further transceiver apparatus. The first device communicates via an optical channel with the plurality of further devices. The transceiver apparatus may comprise a receiver for receiving light representing optical wireless communication signals transmitted by the further devices, the receiver comprising a photodetector; receiver-side processing circuitry for processing optical wireless communication signals received by the receiver to extract data represented by the received optical wireless communication signals; a transmitter for transmitting further light representing optical wireless communication signals; transmitter-side processing circuitry for producing optical wireless communication signals for transmission by the transmitter; and an optical component for at least one of reflecting or guiding at least some light received from at least one of the further devices towards at least one of the further devices.

Signal retransmission system and method

An optical wireless communication (OWC) transceiver apparatus includes at least one light transmitter configured to transmit light of a first wavelength or first range of wavelengths, driver circuitry configured to receive a data signal and to process the data signal to produce a driving signal to drive the at least one light transmitter such that the at least one light transmitter produces a modulated optical signal representative of said data signal, at least one photodetector configured to receive light of a second wavelength or second range of wavelengths and to produce a detection signal in response to the received light, receiver circuitry configured to receive and process the detection signal to produce a receiver signal, and demodulation circuitry configured to perform a decoding and/or demodulation process in accordance with an OWC protocol thereby to extract data from the receiver signal.

An optical wireless communication system comprises: a first device comprising a transceiver apparatus; and a plurality of further devices each comprising respective further transceiver apparatus, wherein the first device is configured to communicate via at least one optical channel with the plurality of further devices, and the transceiver apparatus of the first device comprising: a receiver for receiving light (optionally of a first wavelength or range of wavelengths) representing optical wireless communication signals transmitted by the further devices, the receiver comprising at least one photodetector; receiver-side processing circuitry for processing optical wireless communication signals received by the receiver to extract data represented by the received optical wireless communication signals; a transmitter for transmitting further light (optionally of a second wavelength or range of wavelengths)s representing optical wireless communication signals; transmitter-side processing circuitry for producing optical wireless communication signals for transmission by the transmitter; a multiplexer arrangement that is arranged to receive optical wireless communication signals from a plurality of signal paths and to pass the signals to the transmitter for transmission; and a controller for controlling operation of the transceiver apparatus of the first device, wherein a first of the signal paths to the multiplexer arrangement is from the transmitter-side processing circuitry; a second of the signal paths to the multiplexer arrangement is from the receiver-side; and the controller controls operation of the transceiver apparatus so as to pass via the multiplexer arrangement to the transmitter for re-transmission at least part of an optical wireless communication signal received from one of the further devices by the receiver thereby to indicate to the other further devices of the plurality of further devices that an optical channel of the receiver is busy.

A method for connecting a wireless communication station (STA) with a selected one of a plurality of access points (APs) are described. At least some of the APs are initially substantially unsynchronized in time. The method includes transmitting, by the STA, a beacon request signal via an uplink channel, performing, by the APs and in response to the beacon request signal, a synchronization procedure, the synchronization procedure comprising transmitting, by each of the APs, a respective beacon signal via at least one downlink channel, such that the beacon signals from the plurality of APs are substantially synchronized in time, receiving, by the STA, the beacon signals from the plurality of APs, selecting, by the STA, one of the plurality of APs in dependence on at least one property of the beacon signals, and associating the STA with the selected one of plurality of APs. Wireless communication system and method

An optical wireless communication (OWC) transceiver apparatus comprises: at least one light transmitter configured to transmit light of a first wavelength or first range of wavelengths; driver circuitry configured to receive a data signal and to process the data signal to produce a driving signal to drive the at least one light transmitter such that the at least one light transmitter produces a modulated optical signal representative of said data signal; at least one photodetector configured to receive light of a second wavelength or second range of wavelengths and to produce a detection signal in response to the received light; receiver circuitry configured to receive and process the detection signal to produce a receiver signal; demodulation circuitry configured to perform a decoding and/or demodulation process in accordance with an OWC protocol thereby to extract data from the receiver signal; wherein the transceiver apparatus further comprises: a motion sensor configured to sense motion of at least one object in a region about the transceiver apparatus and to produce motion sensor output based on said sensed motion, and a controller configured to move the transceiver apparatus from a lower power configuration to an intermediate power configuration in response to the motion sensor sensing motion, wherein in the intermediate power configuration the controller is configured to monitor output from at least the at least one photodetector and/or the receiver circuitry and move the transceiver apparatus from the intermediate power configuration to a higher power configuration in response to the monitored output being indicative that the at least one photodetector has received light representative of an optical wireless communication signal.

A wireless communication method includes sending, by a first device in a wireless network, a poll packet () for polling a second device in the wireless network. The poll packet includes an address of the second device. The second device receives and at least partially decodes the poll packet. The second device sends a response packet () in response to the poll packet. The sending of at least part of the response packet is substantially simultaneous with the receiving of at least part of the poll packet by the second device. Wireless communication systems, transmitters and receivers using the method are also described.
