A screen having a free-viewing mode and a restricted-viewing mode, comprising a backlight emitting light into an unrestricted angular range in the free-viewing mode, and into a restricted angular range in the restricted-viewing mode. A transmissive imager is in front of the backlight. Light sources are outside the display area of the imager, and a transparent plate-shaped light guide scattering particles distributed therein is in front of the imager. In the free-viewing mode, the light sources are off, so that light from the backlight passing the imager passes the light guide unaffected. In the restricted-viewing mode, the lights are on, so that light radiating into a restricted angular range and passing the imager is superimposed by light that is scattered into the viewing space due to irradiation of light from the light guide. Thereby, the visibility of an image on the imager is reduced outside the restricted angular range.

Screen for a free and restricted operating mode

A screen with a transmissive image generator with pixels which is operable in at least two operating modes, B1 for a free viewing mode and B2 for a restricted viewing mode, and with an illuminating apparatus comprising a backlight that has a planar extension and radiates light in a restricted angular range, a plate-shaped light guide arranged in front of the backlight and provided with outcoupling elements on one of the large surfaces and/or within its volume, the light guide being transparent to at least 70% of the light emitted by the backlight; and light sources arranged laterally at edges of the light guide. In mode B2, the backlight is switched on and the light sources are switched off, and in mode B1 at least the light sources are switched on. In interaction with the transmissive image generator the illuminating apparatus constitutes an advantageous screen permitting the operating modes.

Screen for a free and a restricted viewing mode

A display screen operable on at least a partial area A in two operating modes, free-viewing mode B1, and restricted-viewing modeB2, with the residual display area of the screen outside the area A maintaining a free viewing mode; comprising a first backlight arranged below the residual display area; a second backlight arranged below the area A; a transmissive image generator in front of the backlights; a plate-shaped transparent light guide arranged between the image generator and the backlights that outcouples, through one of its large surfaces, light coupled in through one of its edges; light sources arranged laterally an edge of the light guide, wherein the light guide is transparent to at least 70% of the light emitted by the backlights, and wherein in the B1 mode, the light sources are switched on, and in the B2 mode, the backlights are on and the light sources are off.

Screen for a free and a restricted viewing mode and application thereof

An illuminating apparatus for a screen operable in at least two operating modes, viz Bfor a free viewing mode and Bfor a restricted viewing mode. The illuminating apparatus comprising: a backlight with a planar extension radiating light in a restricted angular range; a plate-shaped light guide that is, in a viewing direction, arranged in front of the backlight and with outcoupling elements one of the large surfaces and/or within its volume. The light guide is transparent to at least 70% of the light emitted by the backlight and light sources are arranged laterally at the edges of the light guide. Various parameters are specified for the number of outcoupling elements per unit area and for their extension, and in operating mode B, the backlight is switched on and the light sources are switched off. In operating mode Bat least the light sources are switched on.
