A method of removing a crack in a metallic material during a metal making process. The method including: determining the presence of a crack and its crack depth during the metal making process by a crack detecting unit utilizing inductive measurement, sending a crack detection signal and crack depth to a crack removal unit arranged on known distance from the crack detecting unit, the crack removal unit including an ejector configured to eject a carving means, and to vary the intensity of the ejected carving means, removing the detected crack by activating the ejector based on the crack detection signal with an intensity of the ejected carving means based at least on the crack depth.

A method of non-contact measurement of a thickness (d) of an object of an electrically conductive material by means of a Pulsed Eddy Current, PEC, system including a transmitter coil and a receiver coil. The method includes, after having turned off a current in the transmitter coil, at the receiver coil, measuring a voltage induced by the decaying magnetic field at a first time point, a second time point, and a third time point. The method also includes calculating a total magnetic flux which is generated by the eddy currents in the object at the first time point and picked up by the receiver coil, by comparing the measured flux at the first time point with a predetermined total flux picked up by the receiver coil when no object is present. The method also includes normalizing measured magnetic flux resulting from the eddy currents and picked up by the receiver coil, using the calculated total magnetic flux as a normalization factor such that the normalized eddy current flux is independent of a distance between the object and the transmitter and receiver coils. The method also including, based on the measurements at the first, second and third time points, determining the thickness and the resistivity of the object.

A method for non-contact determination of sought properties of an object to be measured by using electromagnetic induction. An electromagnetic field is generated in a transmitter coil placed on one side of the object to be measured. The magnetic field penetrates through the object to be measured and is detected by a receiver coil placed on the other side of the object to be measured. A control coil is placed near the transmitter coil generating a change in the magnetic field of the transmitter coil. A field change in the detecting is detected in the control coil. A method for non-contact measurement of a dimension and/or an electrical property in an electrically conducting object to be measured by using electromagnetic induction. An electromagnetic field is brought to penetrate through the object to be measured. A transmitter coil is place on one side of the object to be measured. A receiver coil is placed on the other side of the object to be measured. A magnetic field is generated in the transmitter coil. A sudden change is generated in the magnetic field generated in the transmitter coil from one level to another. The voltage induced in the receiver coil is detected. The period of time that elapses from the time of the change of the magnetic field in the transmitter coil up to the time when a voltage starts to be induced in the receiver coil is determined. The magnitude of the induced voltage is determined. The thickness and/or electrical conductivity of the object to be measured is calculated.

A method and a device for non-contacting measurement of the measures and position of objects of electrically conductive materials based on electromagnetic induction is provided. A measuring object, a transmitter coil and a receiver coil are placed in relation to each other such that a time-varying magnetic field generated by the transmitter coil at a measuring region of the measuring object is substantially parallel to the surface of the measuring region.
